Hi - I have been admitted to University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and New York University .. I want to pursue undergrad in Psychology. Any suggestions on the relative merits/ de-merits of the two are really appreciated !!!

Since there is reason to believe you may finish college having completed a major other than the one you now anticipate–about half of all college graduates change their major at least once–I wouldn’t make that decision based on the quality of the universities’ psychology departments.

They’re very different kinds of universities, with very different campus vibes. Do you want a state-flagship experience with big-time Big Ten sports, or do you want to be in Greenwich Village? I find it hard to believe that there’s anybody who wouldn’t prefer one experience over the other.

What will each university have cost you at the end of your B.A. or B.S.?

These are the kinds of questions I would advise my own kid to base her decision on.

I wouldn’t make that decision on the basis if quality either, but I will note that Michigan has a top-5 psychology department. It’s also just an all around awesome research university in general, with plenty of majors and departments to choose from. I’ve heard good things about Ann Arbor as a town, and you will have access to the HUGE and loyal Michigan alumni network - I live in New York and I feel like I know as many Michigan (and Penn State) alumni as I known NYU alumni. Possibly more.

I agree that your first concern should be cost - are there significant differences in cost out-of-pocket and indebtedness after you graduate? All other things being equal, personally, I would rather attend Michigan for the reasons I listed above.

Hi, all. Haven’t been on CC in quite a while, but was intrigued by this post. As others have said, these are two very different schools with completely different student bodies. UMICH is a classic big school, Midwest experience in a town that supports the school in every way. Lots of sports, lots of frats, lots of arts, lots of incredible profs, but mostly TAs for undergrads first year courses. Very good place if that’s what you want.

NYU = NYC. Urban chic. Mega-opolis. Gossip Girl. Awesome location. Terrific programs. More artie and indie. No sports culture (yeeuck to many students, which is why they like NYU). Fab business school, Fab anything arts and humanities. NYC is the best. Psych is a common major at both, so I don’t really see a huge difference…

Are you a city mouse or a country mouse? Do you want the classic “rah rah” college experience if you so choose, or want to be the urban hipster in the most vibrant part of NYC? (You could be either at either, by the way – but NYC is the center of fashion and trend universe in the US). Do you want more of a town that surrounds the campus or do you not care about having a campus experience and want to live in NYC as your surroundings?

Have you visited both? Did you have a feeling for one over the other? They are very different places, so it’s key to thing about this choice. Maybe you’d be happy in either place, so it’s a win-win choice.

Just a few thoughts.
