public/private schools with most school pride

princeton alumni give back at a higher rate than the alumni of any other university, by a very wide margin.

I believe it is the MIT Beavers.

as has been mentioned, there are multiple kinds of pride. I'm sure there is heavy school pride at Harvard (as in, people are proud to say "I go to Harvard"), but I don't think it compares to some schools putting 20,000+ yelling students into a football (or basketball) stadium.

where's the Duke and UNC pride during football season?

If you want to talk overall sports pride, it has to be schools that can compete at the top level in multiple sports, especially bball and football, since those are the two biggest. Syracuse, Texas, Michigan, Ok St, Georgia, Florida come to mind.

Well, the sports teams are called the "Engineers" and "Lady Engineers", but the official mascot is indeed a beaver.

When the beaver was chosen as the mascot, the following rationale was given:

[quote]

The beaver not only typifies the Tech (student), but his habits are peculiarly our own. The beaver is noted for his engineering, mechanical skills, and industry. His habits are nocturnal. He does his best work in the dark.

Privates-Duke-tops, Notre Dame, USC, Princeton. Smaller very good LAC'S - Holy Cross, Williams, and Colgate. Holy Cross and Colgate are small schools with alumni giving rates at a high mark of 50%. Duke and ND are known for remarkable school pride and high alumni giving rates.

Private - No one beats USC and Notre Dame.

Public - Michigan, UT, OU, OSU

Maryland could be added to this list too. Not too long ago they went to the Orange Bowl (which is really big-time) in football then won the national title in basketball, in the same year no less, IINM. Pretty heady stuff.

Not to mention that their fans/students are very passionate/prideful to begin with (I know; I've experienced it up close).

baseballindc

I agree, I thought of Maryland later, haha. They also have a good lax program... and they chanted "F*** Duke" on national tv.
