Purchasing a bike locally

I am flying with my son in August. Instead of transporting his really good bike, I thought I'd buy a beater for him (since there is no inside storage). Has anybody had the experience of buying a bike there, through Craigslist, bike shop, etc.?

You might also want to look into the Pennysaver, thrift shops, or garage sales.

yeah, there’s a bike shop called Orange Cycle in the Orange Plaza which is less than a mile of campus. they sell new and used bikes. i got my bike from Walmart (new) for about $70 so that’s also a good place to check. there is also a bike auction every semester at chapman…not sure exactly the details how that works…but there’s another option!

Marioluigi, what did you and your son decide to do re: a bike? My son wants to bring his “good” bike but suddenly I’m thinking your idea might be a better one. With three guys in his room in Pralle, I know there won’t be room to drag his bike in there every night.

We were just going to look at the local Orange Cycle on Tuesday am (moves in at 3 pm at Pralle). If we can’t find anything, I’ll just have him try and find one on his own. I had also heard of the bike auction mentioned previously, so I guess he’ll try there. He also wants to bring his skateboard (he also wants to bring his panini maker, waffle maker,. cello, guitar, mandolin, large speakers). I am doing my best to reign him in, thinking of his poor room mates. We are bringing the cello but the music dept has a locker for him to store it.

If he’s making paninis in Pralle, my son will definitely find his way to his room for snacks! Thanks – I think we’ll check out Orange Cycle, too. S has an early morning move-in time to Pralle.
