I believe the plan is increase IBE enrollment to 200 as per the Sept '22 announcement by Purdue to revamp the School of Management into the School of Business. My guess is that this increase will take place over several years corresponding to an increase in faculty recruitment.
Having visited a lot of colleges over the years, one of the things that makes Purdue unique is that it is STEM dominated and a gigantic university. The nerds rule the joint, and i say that affectionately and with a nod to the more liberal arts minded kids whose vibe is a complementary blend to the campus community. B1G sports are fun regardless of your level of fandom. The students study hard and have fun. You can’t help but smile at the Nerf club chasing each other with their foam darts. Someone was looking on Reddit recently for an advisor for bicycle jousting club. There are regular house parties featuring student bands. Your student will watch Chenflix and then tell next year’s freshmen to watch Chenflix. It’s size ensures you can make what you want of the experience.
I am a BIG alum so know what you mean. BIG schools all have great personalities, and the sports just adds to it.
I encouraged my son to apply to as many BIG schools as possible due to this. So far he got into Iowa, MSU, and Purdue. Still waiting on MN, OSU, PSU and MD. Since his preferred major is business, the “prestige factor” is not as important. I think one of the benefits of the BIG is that all of the schools are excellent universities with strong national reputations in the business world. So, for him the deciding factors will be (i) fit/comfort and (ii) cost.
You can’t go wrong at any of the B1G Ten Universities. They all deliver exceptional educations and life experiences. Purdue definitely over-delivers for OOS…especially for STEM.
Definitely true, and a major reason why my son applied to Purdue. He thankfully did get into Georgia Tech but he is my third kid and this is my 3rd admissions cycle so I have seen lots of super smart kids at the very top of their class not get in to Tech. Definitely a crapshoot if you’re from a populated area!
My thought is Purdue is probably a harder admit than Clemson and NC State for engineering so probably not a backup school for those kids.
Be sure to differentiate the two AI programs. Poster above referred to the BA program in the College of Liberal Arts.
This is how it worked for my daughter last year. I assume it’s the same this year. Though the communications from Housing/web site will be the definitive source.
My daughter was in the Women in Engineering LC, so housed in Shreve with other females engineers, which was very nice. She was also in the global engineering LC, leading to her pandemic-cancelled Study Abroad. Both were low effort and beneficial.
Thanks for that correction!
For those who are interested, Purdue’s Data Digest has a ton of information.
Indiana residents are 47% of undergrads, 27% in the College of Engineering (so 56% outside CoE).

My daughter is also a CS Freshman, in the Honors College/CS Honors, double majoring in Math with minors in Film and Video Studies and Gender Studies. My older graduated MechE in 2021.
I’ll chime in to questions where/when I can.
Thoughts/advice off the top of my head:
- I highly recommend attending BGR.
- Make reservations for move-in, parents weekend, etc. way in advance. Marriott opens 50 weeks in advance and I reserve all football weekends then, as one of them will be Parent’s Weekend. Probably 10/13-15 this year - Marriott/Hilton already fully booked.
Thank you for the feedback. Looking at the dorm options now. Any recommendations? It seems like most are not near the engineering buildings, but then again maybe most freshman classes not in that area. Also, only some dorms with AC & dining halls inside. Would prefer to have both. My son is looking at Epics, which I believe you can be housed in Shreve. I lived in Earhart 34 years ago, no AC and female only…
Is Marriott Courtyard a good choice?
Thanks!
Shreve, Eahart, Harrison, McCutcheon, Owen, Tarkington and Wiley have been designated freshmen-only next year. Everything else that’s not reserved for honors or learning communities has been snapped up by returning students. Winifred Parker Hall is designated for Honors (across the street from Honors College housing).
Marriott Courtyard is among a long row of hotels in Lafayette near I-65. It frequently hosts college sports teams so room availability is sometimes tight even if not a football weekend but it’s a fine location.
Most importantly, book directly with the hotel brand for popular (i.e. move in, football, graduation, etc). Third-party sites will take your family weekend reservation and then you’ll get an email saying no availability two weeks before the event. Didn’t happen to me but several parents reported experiencing this.
When was parents’ weekend in the fall of 2022? I am just trying to get an idea of when it might be for the fall of 2023.
Correct. The AI in computer science has more courses in Math, CS while the one in liberal arts has more in philosophy.
My concern is that only 5 CS courses listed in the AI BA degree - is it too little?
Other universities such as Berkeley also hasp CS degree in BA but the CS courses are similar for both BA and BS
It was the weekend of October 14th but it can vary by a few weeks. Purdue usually releases the dates in the Spring. Be sure to sign up for the family connection newsletter.
Just a heads-up that you can now register for the Purdue’s for Me events.
My son (current sophomore) was in EPICS. He loved the experience. That LC was living in Shreve that year. It does not have a dining hall, but does have AC. He ended up in a classic double, which was great - many freshman that year had temp housing situations. I think registering for an LC was a benefit to him for housing placement.
Yes, we were just able to register for the Purdue’s For Me event as well. Good news.
My daughter never had a dining hall inside her dorm. I honestly wouldn’t worry about that part as all the dorms are super close to the dining halls. And the kids get used to the big campus and having to walk to classes.
Unless something has changed, your student will just rank room type (i.e double with A/C, quad with A/C, etc…) not the specific dorm. Of course if they get into Epics, then housing is set.
The housing website has a good FAQ page for incoming freshmen. New Undergraduate Contracting FAQs | Purdue University Residences
For hotels, we typically try to stay a the Hilton Garden Inn at the bottom of Chauncey so we can walk to/from campus.
Can you explain what Epics is please? Do students get invited or do they apply?
