move-in is by appointment-ish. you pick day and rough timeframe but they will accommodate needs outside normal hours
Yep, same problem here trying to sign up for Purdue for Me. We are lucky to be close enough that we can get there easily but I’m going to bet these fill up fast. Last year we couldn’t even get a spot for a regular ole campus tour because they were all booked up for weeks. We’ve been on campus a few times for high school activities but have only ever done the engineering tour.
Purdue’s For Me is a full court press to sell you on accepting the offer and welcoming you to campus if you already have. It’s a nice to do but not must do if your decision is made. There is swag and student ambassadors. There are so many online events for new families and a robust new parent cohort Facebook page so you will be well informed whether you attend or not.
How fast do these fill up? Especially since none of us can currently register!
I agree. And it’s still a bargain relative to other top 60 universities. Purdue is also increasing class sizes, and getting economies of scale, to keep freezing tuition.
Purdue for Me starts with a dinner. Perspective students and families are invited by major. You attend the meal along with department representatives and several current students in that major. Our dinner had parents sit with department reps and perspective students sit with current ones. The next day there were general information sessions, plus sessions by department and more by major, an honors college meeting, dorm tours, campus tours, etc. Basically you will be asked to download the Purdue Guide from the app store and eventually you will be able to see your Purdue for Me options and select your individual itinerary depending on what is important to you.
It books quickly, but not within hours. If everyone is having trouble, then keep trying. You aren’t at a disadvantage.
I would try to leave the fourth person at home. There is a dinner specifically for perspective students and parents, and many info sessions were “standing room only”. So having extra people there can probably be done, but is not ideal.
I am getting the same error message. Wonder when they will clear it up?
It looks like it is schedule to start at 8am, and go to 4. Maybe no more dinner?
Classes start Monday, August 21. That we know.
I doubt firm dates for Boiler Gold Rush have been formally announced, but if it is like 2022, it could start the afternoon of the 14th. Parents would want to leave that Monday morning at the absolute latest. Most leave earlier.
If that’s the correct estimated date, they will likely offer move-in appointments between 8/11 and the morning of 8/14, Monday being the least desirable date because most kids are in by then and the activities start in the afternoon so it doesn’t give the student much time to get settled. There are volunteers who will help BRG attendees schlep everything up to their room.
If the student doesn’t attend orientation, I estimate move in to be between 8/17 to 8/19. You’re on your own moving in during this time frame. There are no volunteers to help.
Kids at Purdue typically don’t purchase books until after the first class. So parents can cross that off their list, although a visit to Wal-Mart or Meijer is usually on the agenda.
ALL of this is a guess based on 2022, so if you book a hotel room, make sure you can cancel it.
Can you tell me more about the Boiler Gold Rush? This is our first college student so everything is so new to me!
Boiler Gold Rush is four days of welcome speeches, pep rallies, entertainment, trying out new cafeterias with your group, learning about campus traditions, the chants, the cheers. It is learning about how to find academic support, mental health support, etc. They go on a scavenger hunt, they learn about the bus system (public bus pass is included in the tuition). They meet their RAs, have floor meetings, and the whole week culminates in an activities fair.
Some kids party, some don’t. Some meet their friend group, others won’t make those connections until they start classes and activities. It is a worthwhile experience either way.
These things are weird. My son applied to OSU and Delaware and is still waiting to hear back. Yet he was accepted to Purdue right away.
It think the college admissions process is so opaque that it is just hard to know for sure.
BGR is new-student orientation. You are assigned to a group and there are activities and events to get you acclimated to where things are on campus, campus cheers and traditions and a chance to meet other incoming students before all the returning ones are back. It costs somewhere around $400 but there is limited aid available if the cost is prohibitive. Some students hate it, some love it. Some stray from their assigned group to hang out with others and some stick with their group. The week ends with the traditional Fountain Run.
My OOS S23 also got into IBE! He is ranked top 5% in his class, earned As in all of his 10 AP classes but only got a 1270 on SATs. IBE was his second choice to engineering but he is SUPER excited about the program. He even expressed interest in getting an MBA after undergrad in his essays.
Purdue’s website states that IBE admits an “elite group of freshman each year” and is not open for the transfer of other students into the major. I read that in 2021 there were about 100 students enrolled in the major. Does anyone know how many students are admitted to IBE each year?
I’d highly recommend incoming Boilers attend BGR. My D thoroughly enjoyed her time. Honors college has some special BGR events too. Great way to feel comfortable with campus and meet new friends before classes start.
FWIW, my D didn’t do any accepted student days. She couldn’t make any of the dates work with her theater schedule and felt like she already knew they were her #1.
What major ? Purdue is difficult vs others for some but not all.
Yes there is little definitiveness to college admissions unless the school states auto acceptance with specific criteria being met.
I have heard that in Georgia, Purdue is becoming a very popular option for many HS students down here who cannot get into Ga Tech due to its extraordinarily small freshman classes (which is a huge point of controversy down here). I am sure that is also the case for FL, SC and NC, due to the competitiveness of the local public engineering schools (UF, Clemson and NCSU).
Thank you!
Thank you!!
