I agree Oct seems likely but that is the Ohio State game. Homecoming is Sept 30th so it’s possible the September Wisconsin or Syracuse games could be Family Weekend. Family Comnections office has held this event in Sept through 1st weekend of Nov according to them.
The new housing selection system meant that the most expensive options were what was left when the last lottery selections were made. Some kids who had paid $5000ish for the year were suddenly looking at double that (or more) for next year. The key to staying on campus is following whatever next year’s process is to a T and hoping the lottery time slot is a good one. Add the biggest incoming class year after year and suddenly you need 10,000 more beds. Buying Aspire and doubling each apartment’s capacity (8-man 4bedroom!) didn’t solve the housing problem.
I don’t get the impression Purdue yield protects much. A lot of schools do - you and you see it when tops kids are not all getting in but the next level down are widely getting in. Purdue is at the point for Engineering and CS where they can take all top-range kids and who knows how they pick one from another - geography? darts? every third app?
Of all the schools my son applied to, Purdue seemed the most objective and data-driven.
I have been following this issue and I think the gist is, IF they indicated in Oct that they wanted to stay on campus they will get housing though they may not like it or it will be expensive. Many kids missed declaring this “interest” and did not get entered into the housing lottery. They originally scheduled a December lottery for kids who did not originally express interest but they ran out of space with the interest kids and cancelled it. So those kids who missed the email are scrambling- but it seems to me, finding spots in private apartments, sometimes several miles away. The biggest advantage to getting a good room is having roommates with a lot of credit hours.
Welp, my D should be coming in with a bunch, although I’m sure many others are as well. I think this highlights a fact about big universities… they aren’t going to chase you if you don’t have something filled out/turned in/submitted.
This has all been somewhat reassuring. It’ll be okay if she doesn’t get her top choice or it has to be an expensive option to be close/safe. Coming from Cali, we have universities with kids living in their cars, and actually being homeless is something I’d prefer she avoid!
Thank you for the information on the Honors program. My son was admitted to Honors and Robotics Engineering technology. Is Honors like a Learning Community? Does a student either do Honors or a Learning Community but not both?
Yes, honors college is it’s own living learning community.
Honors college is its own LLC. I would venture to say it is one of the more active ones too. Lots of social events and opportunities to connect and do cool things.
It isn’t the only “honors” option. The student may approach his/her advisor about being an honors student in their major, and the advisor can explain what that entails by department/program.
Hi. Was Robotics Engineering Technology your son’s first choice? My son was accepted into this major at UP as well… I am trying to learn about this major, the polytechnic school, pro/cons, career/job prospects. Any insight would be really appreciated.
My son was just accepted for Planetary Sciences. I wonder how may applicants they get? Does anyone know how large this program is, and how many were accepted? From Purdue’s website on the program, looks to be a small group. Not a bad thing, we are just wondering class size.
Robotics Engineering Technology was my son’s first choice. He took PLTW courses for 4 years and was on the Robotics team at his school. I am also interested in finding out about the major at Purdue. I wonder if he can double major or major/minor with Mechanical or Electrical Engineering major/minor.
In HC, you can still join the few Learning Communities that don’t have a residential requirement. The LC page describes the requirements. My older was in the Global Engineering LC while also being in the residential Women in Engineering LC.
My younger is in the CS Honors program, which other schools/majors also have. These are non-residential and don’t conflict with HC or other LCs.
The MechE policy is at Policies for Minors, Certificates, Dual Degrees, and Degree+ - Mechanical Engineering - Purdue University - down the page, “Adding ME as Dual/Second Major”. One thing that stands out is that you need to demonstrate that you can graduate in 5 years. My oldest earned an Entrepreneurship certificate, which was 2 unique classes, plus one course for study abroad. This required three Summer courses (7 credits).
Engineering is a packed schedule - unless you start with quite a few credits (she had none) a dual Engineering degree will likely take more than 4 years.
And piling on with the above - Indy is a better airport choice if you can fly there directly. But it’s not a large airport and it may be might harder to fly to than O’Hare. Both have multiple shuttles to campus - O’Hare is an extra 90 minutes or so for the drive, but that would be eaten up by adding a connection to get to Indy.
I don’t believe that Mech E is not on the list of available minors at Purdue but ECE is. Double majoring would be extremely difficult just because of the number of courses that are required.
My OOS DS got admitted to the engineering program, Honors College, and Trustee Scholarship! He’s a high stat kid, NMSF, good ECs, and I assume he wrote a very good essay—he did his applications all on his own, wouldn’t share anything with us so I can only assume! Got an email today inviting him to apply for the Stamp Scholars and the Beering Scholarship. Pretty cool! I think Purdue is his #2 choice but in his mind, scholarship offers will play a big part. I toured the campus with him in October and was really impressed. I think it would be a good fit for him but I’m kinda biased towards midwest land grant schools.
While he waits to hear from his other top choice, I’m trying to gather as much info as I can. @momofboiler1, can you point me to the specific facebook groups you mention? There are several and not all look very useful!
Congrats to your student!
I don’t believe the official Purdue parent and guardian FB page is up yet but there are unofficial groups already forming. The university should be sending something out to families soon.
And keep an eye out for the Honors College Families FB group too.
Congratulations.
My son did not get into the FYE program at the main campus but has been given the opportunity to go to one of the regional campuses. He did not list an alternate major to FYE, which was likely not a smart move. Is a Purdue Ft. Wayne or Indy really worth looking into? Purdue was his top school and he is quite disappointed. He has multiple acceptances at other schools already locked up, but he really wanted Purdue.
For reference…
3.93 GPA at a highly competitive catholic school
34 ACT
4 AP and multiple Honors classes
Lots of ECs, mostly music related
Thanks for any opinions/insight.
My opinion is no. There is no guaranteed transfer pathway to main campus so unless your student is excited about the Ft Wayne or Indy campuses, I’d look at the other options. I’m sorry main campus did not work out for your child.
Thank you for the reply! That was my next question…is a regional campus truly a pathway to West Lafayette or is it largely a pipe dream? You’ve pretty much answered that and I appreciate it.
