Purdue Early Action for Fall 2023 Admission

My DS got deferred for first choice major Data Science and her second choice is Business Analytics in Kransert School, I see a number of kids offered their second choice major on this group but my daughter’s letter said she is deferred and could be offered second choice by March 31st if she does not make it to Data Science. Can anybody offer insights into why they did not offer her second choice major directly ?
Her stats are 3.97 GPA from a very competitive public school in Texas, 1420 SAT, 4 yr varsity athlete and a number of leadership ECS including Nationals award in BPA.

with his #s, he can study at a lot of great universities.

Why not go somewhere and get a full four-year, big school experience, assuming that’s what he’s looking for?

Purdue is obviously fantastic but so are many places.

My guess is that means they are still considering her for Data Science and didn’t want to say ‘no’, but I’m not entirely sure. My D never put down a second choice major and it seems like this deferral stuff for both is pretty new. Hopefully some of the parents who more recently went through an admissions cycle will be able to shed some light. @RichInPitt - Do you know?

I have the same question. My daughter is OOS and was deferred for CS her first choice and it appears not yet considered for her second choice Artificial Intelligence. Purdue is a top choice for her.

The 2nd choice major is offered only after the 1st choice is ruled out. Deferred means your student remains under consideration for the 1st choice. it means still 2 chances to get in. I would have my student let Purdue know of my interests and commitment to Purdue in this situation.

I think he should move on to considering his acceptances at other engineering colleges. I’m sorry he didn’t get into FYE. Even if he’d put a second choice for major, it would have likely been something in engineering technology (through Purdue Polytechnic). He would likely have been admitted for that major, but my advice would be the same.

As a resident, I’m familiar with the other campuses, and I don’t think they’ll give your son the experience he’s probably wanting.

He sounds like a great applicant, and he’ll have huge success elsewhere.

Your student is still in the mix for both majors instead of just one. You can tell them to consider your second choice your new first choice but I wouldn’t recommend that if your student’s preference hasn’t changed. March 31st is their deadline but decisions trickle out weekly until then if past practice is any indication. Write a strong letter of interest, have a school admin vouch for it and wait it out.

If there’s any new stuff your student could share to argue for a reconsideration then it’s a personal decision of what kind of effort to put into it. There are definitely kids who reject the rejection who get in after appealing. Fair or not, if your student needs financial aid the uphill climb is even higher. But it happens. Or go be great somewhere else. Taking the regional offer would not be a sure fire way into engineering in West Lafayette. Thanks everyone. If it was a case of go a year or so to Ft. Wayne or Indy, do well and have a clear transfer pathway to main campus, it might be worthy of consideration. However, with the other great options that he already has we will likely go another route. Really appreciate those who weighed in on this.

My son, OOS with very good numbers, was deferred CS (second choice major is Cybersecurity). I was surprised, as all of the Big 10 schools he applied to have accepted him into computer science/engineering, all three have offered $10K+ merit aid, and he was accepted to the honors college at one of them (Indiana) and invited to apply to the honors college of another.

My question is this: because he was deferred, it seems as though we should forget about merit aid altogether, assuming he even gets in. Correct?

OOS Merit is hard to come by. But Purdue costs less than much of the Big Ten so your mileage may vary on overall costs.

My daughter too had Data Science as her first and Business Analytics as her second choice. She was rejected from both and was offered admission at a different campus. So they considered her for both majors before the decision.
It was a bit surprising. We knew that Data Science is very competitive but thought she might be a good fit for Business school. We are in-state and from a huge highly competitive high school, she has 3.95 gpa , 32 ACT and 12 AP classes including 4 in her senior year.

Yes, merit awards are only given in the EA round.

My daughter’s registration for Purdue’s for Me has been cancelled.
Luckily I had asked my wife to use southwest airlines because of miles and southwest does not have cancellation charges. So after how many days after registering should I book my airline ticket? I had registered on Sunday around 9 AM, got “You’re registered for Purdue’s for Me” on Monday and got cancellation on Tuesday.

Is anyone else getting this email:
"
I regret that you will be unable to attend Purdue’s for Me on Monday, February 20, 2023, but I hope you will be able to make time for a visit to Purdue in the near future.

If you would like to explore other visit opportunities, you will find more information on our website
"

Oddly when I go to the website it still shows 02/20 as available for college of science.

We are registered for the 20th as well. I will have to check with my son, but I don’t think we received a cancellation.

Edit: Just checked with my son and he said we are still registered for the 20th. Maybe try to register again.

A deferral on the primary major is generally a decent sign that she is still in the running for DS. I would take it as a positive and worst case she will be in the running for Business Analytics when the DS decision is eventually made.

Oh no! That’s so disappointing. Did you register on Sunday or Monday? I thought the registration site didn’t open up until Monday morning even though it was supposed to open Sunday afternoon/evening. I wonder if you got in early and then they cancelled it.

I registered on Sunday morning. I clicked on next steps after logging to view the decision. May be I missed on not opening up until Monday. Where was that instruction?

How do you “have a school admin vouch for it?” Do you need to ask your counselor for a new letter of recommendation? Since they only allowed 2 letters originally, d son forwarded letters from a science and math teachers but not from counselor. However, the counselor’s letter is in Naviance, so I’m guessing he needs to ask for a new one? Thanks!!

I don’t think there were any instructions. I believe either the website or an email said registration would open on Sunday at 5:00 but several of us here were unable to register at that time or later on Sunday evening. We were subsequently able to register Monday morning. I just wonder if they accidentally opened it up early on Sunday and then erased early registrants. No fault of yours of course and I’m just speculating. I hope you’re able to still plan a visit.
