S is a junior (already!) beginning his college search and he is open to anything! So far, he has visited Rose Hulman (very impressive) and Purdue (very impersonal). He has top grades, so I would not think that admission to these schools would be any problem. He is pretty easy going, so I believe he will be happy with most any school he chooses. So I am wondering if five years from now it will make any difference which choice he makes since both of these schools are highly rated? Does anyone have any thoughts on the reputation of these two engineering schools?

My husband attended Rose-Hulman as a EE/CS double major, and has highly recommended the summer Catapult program to any junior that asks about the school. He has worked with Purdue grads, and that program prepares you well also. As far as reputation - outside of the Midwest (we live in New York state) Rose-Hulman is not as well known, unless you work for a larger corporation where there are alums, but everyone knows Purdue. However, I would give more weight to where your son feels a better fit, whether that be due to size, campus or whatever - he would leave either school well prepared for the workforce I'm sure. Good luck!

They are both good schools, but one thing to know about rose-hulman is that it is 91% white and 81% male, so if your son is looking for more diversity Purdue would probably be a better option.

I second the Operation Catapult suggestion at Rose-Hulman; I attended last summer and it was the time of my life.

Thanks for reminding me of the Catapult camp. I am sure that he would like it, but yikes, what a commitment of money and time(he runs cross country and trains all summer). It might be worth it if he is more certain on his choice and graduates with a very, very good job!
