Hi! I have a question about my application.
I’m a founder of a charity organization in my town, and am going to be interviewed in a piece for my county’s news channel. Should I mention that the organization was featured on this channel? Would this be beneficial or just seem like I’m trying to make myself seem important? If I should include this, where would I mention it? I’m assuming under additional information.
Thanks!
I wouldn’t bother for a piece in the county news.channel. Keep the focus on what you accomplished, not the publicity.
Let’s see if others have a different opinion.
Talk about the charity, not the publicity. My daughter won a number of engineering awards that were highlighted in local media. She made no mention of that, just the awards and accomplishments.
Under Additional Information (include the link).
I have a different opinion!
First, thank you for founding the organization. I admire the initiative.
I think they would like to know that. Of course, you’d want to put it in an appropriate context–not look at me, I’m great (which I’m not suggesting would be the case) but I was able to garner some valuable media attention for a cause that is important to me. Getting media attention can be important to success, and I think local media is a pretty darn good place to start. I don’t think that is trivial at all. And it shows initiative and marketing savvy, which is compliment. After all, as noted, charities will be more successful when they become better known to more people.
As far as mechanics, I can’t really help you there. Mine handled all that themselves. But Additional Info seems like the right spot. If you are mostly looking at large state universities, then that does seem appropriate. If you are looking at LACs and have had or will have any contact with an admissions rep, then you might include it as part of your communication with them.
Good luck!
