Q: College Prerequisites, what do they mean?

Hello,

Many universities require that students take certain courses. However, as a student in Canada, I do not have access to such classes (ie European History). Also, it is often required for applicants to have taken several science courses. Cornell, for example, states, "3 Units of Science (including 1 biology, 1 chemistry or physics)". (Firstly what does the "or" mean here?) Due to the curriculum offered at my school, I am not able to fulfill that biology credit without sacrificing a chemistry credit. Yet in grades 9 and 10 the science course covered some basic biology.

Can anything be done about the situation? Will I still be able to apply under such circumstances?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you will be able to apply. Talk it over with your academic/college counselor, maybe she can include that information in the recommendation she writes you. Schools will take that into account so long as it’s expressly stated somewhere. Plus I think they recognize that different school systems function differently and will evaluate your transcript accordingly.

And the or means you need to take either chemistry or physics but are not required to take both.

Good luck!

I apologize for tge late reply; thank you so much!
