QU! Is it really a good school OR not?

Hello all. As the calendar approaches what is supposed to be a day that will finally bring a sense of excitement and relief, I'm afraid the college my son has all but 100% decided upon might be a mistake. The guide books (Princeton Review & US News ) are very positive about QU. But the forums and blogs are mostly brutal.

My son is interested in pursuing a degree in Athletic Training and living on Long Island he is
leaning toward QU based on distance, aesthetics. AT program. We are also considering Ithaca College, but that is a good deal further away, so a long shot.

I would appreciate input from parents and especially students (who've lived in the "trenches") that could honestly tell me about: academics, student life, underage drinking (ugh) and, is it really 'da "Jersey Shore's" AAA team?

I find it sort of interesting that this QU forum is pretty much loaded with posts (unfortunately) a lot negative. I've check many others schools and most have little or no information. But this one is almost rampantly negative with an occasional positive parent or alumni prospective.

The campus is undoubtedly nice, the administrators (at the accepted student open house) gave a great presentation. They actually spoke about jobs at the end of 4 years. Many colleges talk about Grad School. The dorms look well above average, the facilities appear neat and clean. I even presented a list of questions to the head of the AT department who answered each question in detail. In general, the school seems very well run.

BUT STILL! There is discussion after discussion about how bad a place it is.

As the clock ticks away, any honest information you can supply will hopefully make the decision a lot easier.

TIA
David

My child is debating over the same choices, Quinnipiac or Ithaca. Ithaca seems to have a very slight edge in ratings, but I would state both fairly equal, depending on specific majors. Q has a nicer campus and is not as isolated as Ithaca. Security statistics are somewhat similar as well. I can’t be of much help except to say I am curious what others might think but Q is where my child would like to go - though we received less financial aid from Q than from Ithaca. Some other websites to check out would be , College and StudentReviews.

I hope we can get some insights in the next couple of days.
What does your child hope to major in? Are you having the same second thoughts we are,
based on the posts you’ve read here and elsewhere?

If the forum rules allow, could you please email me those college review sites to
infofix@verizon.net. Sorry to the moderator it this is not allowed. I promise not to do it again :-0

Thank you,
David.

infofix, if you google the name of the college along with the words student reviews, you’ll get a few web sites that have reviews for the various schools. It seems many people tend to post more negative reviews on sites where there is no need to log in, so take with a grain of salt.

Hello- My daughter is a freshman at QU and loves it. She’s a journalism major so I can’t give my opinion about the school of health and sciences. She lucked out on housing and is in one of the suites. She has 3 suitemates that are in the PT & PA programs and are also very happy there.

Is it a party school? I don’t think it’s considered a party school but there is without a doubt underage drinking going on. Doesn’t that happen at almost all colleges? Her friends attend Bentley, Bryant, Stonehill, Holy Cross, BU and Northeastern and there are parties every Wed- Sat according to my daughter. The shuttle brings the students to the local shopping areas in Hamden and into New Haven at night and on the weekends. She claims that without the shuttles she would have felt trapped without a car. She uses the shuttles at least 2-3 times per week.

I laughed when you made reference to the Jersey Shore group. I don’t think the actual student body at QU could blend in at the Jersey Shore house BUT there is a large population of males that go by the theme GLT (gym, laundry & tanning). LOL. My daughter has a few male friends that she claims take longer to get ready than she does.

Not sure that I helped answer your questions but I did want to respond back and say that I believe that QU is a great school. Just think how well known QU will be once they open the medical school that’s being built.

I have to head out for a few hours so let me know if you have any specific questions.

Sorry for the delay in my reply, but thank you for taking the time to give details, it really helps. Sounds like and your daughter (and you) would definately do it again if given the choice. Best of luck to your daughter in her studies.

Any other student replies would surely be welcome.

btw: I noticed that there is a webcam on campus that shows, what I think is, the main Quad area. I haven’t seen many students (almost none since yesterday afternoon) walk by it. What’s up with that?

David

If you were looking at the webcam on a weekend morning then that’s the reason why you didn’t see too many students. The campus doesn’t wake up until noon! Ahhhh… to be a student again. :-)

I also think most of the classes are in what I would call the back of the campus (the New Road entrance) and not in the front where the camera seems to be. The angle of the webcam doesn’t show the side of the student center/dining hall that I’m sure is always busy. My daughter has most of her classes in Tudor Hall or what I believe is called the Arts & Sciences building which wouldn’t be in the path of the quad area.

Hopefully a current or past QU student will respond back to you about their experience at QU.

Sorry for the delay in responding. My child is interested in health sciences, and we were very impressed with Quinnipiac’s School of Health Sciences. The new medical school is scheduled to be completed before she graduates so hopefully she will be able to either do internships or volunteer experience. Q is closer for us, Division I sports, but is alot more expensive and then she will be facing Graduate School expenses. But it’s where she want to go!!

I’m not a student, but did meet with an administrator at Quinnipiac within the last month regarding my work as a consultant.

Quinnipiac seems to me to be a school on the rise. The campus is attractive, with a mountain in the backyard.

They have also come out of nowhere since I went to college 30 yeras ago, and have become known. They were a sleepy little college then. Since then, they have raised an endowment of $250-million or so, which is impressive for a school of their size and age.

They’ve been very good at promoting the school. A poll by Quinnipiac University is mentioned in the media somewhere daily, it seems. It brings them national name recognitiion.

Ithaca is little known, and when I went there, I wasn’t impressed by the campus (but the lake is a plus, if your child likes that type of environment).

I think that Quinnipiac is on its way up, and would favor it over Ithaca.

No problem on the delay momsok, glad you returned to the group here.

I don’t know about Ithaca anymore. I spoke to someone from the department recently and they didn’t wow me. I mean the information about the program was good (I’d say pretty much the same as QU) but they were not so patient. QU made me feel much more comfortable answering my questions. Of course this is subjective, just telling you my experience with the two.

I did find a recent graduate (through another means - not this forum) who was kind enough to provide me we with a pretty detailed and glowing opinion of their time as a QU student in the HS department.

Well time is getting short. When will you force a decision from your daughter
For us, this weekend we’ll make it final.

David

Unfortunately, the decision might come down to a financial one. Her Dad has not taken an active role in the college search process (we’re divorced), and might have to be resuscitated when he learns about his expected financial contribution!!! Though the difference in cost between her choices boils down to a few thousand dollars between Quinnipiac and Ithaca, I’m hoping he will be helpful and supportive about the choice she has made. I am fortunate to have a loan option through my employer that can help if needed. Are you feeling more positive about Quinnipiac?

Yes. Its practically a done deal. The more my son hears about QU the more it thinks it’s a better place for him. As it looks now, the deposit check will be going out on Monday.

I’ll let you know for sure when it does.

Good luck.
David

Quinnipiac is a great school. Every year it moves up in the US News rankings. It is the home of thousands of smart, hard working students. It would be a great fit for any rising senior. Go Bobcats!!!

Here is a really good link for the architect firm which has designed many of Quinnipiac’s buildings. They have many pictures and descriptions of QU. [Centerbrook Architects and Planners](<a href=“Centerbrook Architects and Planners – Architecture Firm in CT”>Centerbrook Architects and Planners – Architecture Firm in CT). Good luck!

Hi momsok-

As suspected, my son has decided on QU. Did your daughter do the same?

Good luck to you and her.

David

its as good as you make it. But if he’s gonna go, best be a “health science” or business-related major, otherwise the career counseling is a joke. And socially things will be harder (ie relating to other people’s academic experiences)

Once again, DonnyB is a QU hater who enjoys slandering the school. The health science programs at QU are among the most respected e.g. physician assistant is ranked #11 nationally by US News. However, all of the programs at QU are solid e.g. undergraduate business is #91 nationally according to Bloomberg. A student cannot go wrong with any of the majors. Good luck!

Does anyone know how good the pre medicine program is here?

This msg is a response for Fran from a few days ago.
It doesn’t seem like I can respond to a private msg.

Hi Fran,
I would be happy to help. My son did in fact choose QU.
He likes it a lot, and is doing well in the program he choose (AT).
Now a sophomore, he is considering doing a dual major with PT.

As you probably know, QU is known (at least here in the Northeast) as
a great college for all Health Sciences. They also are in the process of opening a hospital at the North Haven Campus. He tells me most teachers are great. Plus everyone I’ve spoken to there from Admins
to the head of his department, all are very nice and respectful.

Back then I was very concerned about the academics and student body there. Meaning - I was afraid that it would be a light weight college. I no longer think that. I realize this is not an Ivy League experience, but it seems like a great 2nd tier college.

One other thing I think worth mentioning is that we do not have any first hand knowledge of other colleges so we can’t do that type of comparison. But during the “college tour” phase of our search we visited a lot of colleges and QU was my son’s top pick.

All that said, I realize that you (as I was then) are seeking any/all pieces of information and assurances that you are making the right decision. Especially sending your daughter so far away. I hope I don’t help you make the “wrong” decision  Just telling you what I know about the college so far.

Be well and good luck to you and your daughter.
Dave

Info fix,
Thanks for your response!
Just Pm’d you again. Appreciate the info.

There are many things we like about Qu, and I have a feeling my dd will end up there. Glad to hear the academics are solid.

Thanks again!
