Quarter system, inevitably need to change spring courses

I am a UC-to-UC transfer. My UC, like many others, is on the quarter system. The goal is to satisfy GEs and major prereqs at my school for UC to UC reciprocity.

When it came time to do the TAU I listed my new fall grades and planned winter courses, which included my last major prereq. I was still short on two classes for my GEs so I then proceeded to predict my spring course load- which is weaksauce in my opinion. How am I supposed to know which classes I will be taking in a future quarter? Especially with all these budget cuts.

Anyway, for spring I said I would be taking Asian American studies which essentially would be taking care of the last two GEs. When my pass time came, weeks after the deadline for TAU, this class was full- no surprise.

I found other courses that satisfy the remaining requirements however.

My question is: Do I HAVE to report these changes to all the UCs I applied to right away? Isn't the whole point of TAU to see your grades and to see that you will complete GEs and prereqs? If I have done that then what's the big deal?

I was planning to update my application and IF and only if I am accepted to the schools then I can always call them and tell them my spring course work had changed but the units are the same and my GEs are still satisfied.

Otherwise, I do not see the point in hassling myself to get multiple admissions officers on the phone, who are all probably busy still determining admissions decisions, only to find out that it didn't matter and I am rejected anyway.

This just seems strange. Do the UCs just expect all those on the quarter system to call them to report changes to their spring course work when they undoubtedly could not get the classes that they planned? It was only a prediction after all.

/rant

I’m in the same boat. I’m not at a UC, but I’m at one of the three community colleges in CA that uses quarter system too, and it’s really not built for us. I wrote I’d be taking an elective class in my major’s department, not GE or major prereq, and it just isn’t offered due to budget cuts, so I’m taking a different one. I figure I’ll call all the UCs right after I register, personally…better safe than sorry, but it is really frustrating. Maybe someone else has already dealt with this and will let us know. :(

I’m at UCR doing UC reciprocity. Same thing for my spring schedule, as it is different for what i put in TAU, I think I’m just gonna contact all the UCs I applied to x.x

I got a message from the UCs last night asking me to more accurately depict what classes I would be taking for Spring, which still is an annoying question considering my registration pass times at UCSB aren’t over. I guess we’ll just have to update each campus individually if needed

When were you guys planning to call? And how should I go about this?

what schools did you apply to? i have instructions for some of the schools

The same thing happened to me. I’m at UCSC and I enroll this week. I talked to a couple counselors and most said just updating your TAU is fine cause it’s open til the end of March. But Berkeley wants an actual letter mailed to them.

I applied to UCR, UCI, UCLA

I only have UCI and UCLA. Here:

How do I notify UCI of a course schedule change?
You are responsible for reporting any schedule changes to your class schedule. This is important because course changes may affect your eligibility in certain majors. Either use the Message Center in MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI or send a letter, being sure to include your UC Irvine Student ID Number, and mail your letter to:
Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools
University of California, Irvine
260 Aldrich Hall
Irvine, CA 92697-1075

UCLA:
[- UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/ContactForm/DataChanges.aspx)

I sent UCLA a course update through that site and they never got back to me =/

I tried to update my course schedule for UCI right now through the Message Center and I got confused.

There are only four boxes in which to enter courses.
And you can either show the classes you dropped or added.

However, I dropped (actually, not really because I never officially had the classes to begin with) three classes and took on five other courses.

Either way, I am not sure how to enter this. I feel like if I just enter the 4 (out of 5) courses I added, that will look wrong… as if I added four classes on top of the three I had put down originally. If I only put the classes that I ‘dropped’ (3), then won’t it look like I am then taking no classes?

How am I supposed to update my schedule with only four boxes??

@Allfieldsarerequired Why are you leaving SB for Irvine? I, myself, live 5 minute drive from UC-Irvine but plan on transferring to SB.

There are various reasons. At first, I wanted to transfer for the sake of leaving SB. I literally would have went anywhere, even a CSU or CCC. It was freshman year and I had decided that the college I had chosen was not for me. Trust me, you get tired of hearing the same old “hmmm…party school” observation over and over and OVER again. I worked my butt off to get into a UC so it is very frustrating and I find it very disrespectful when people constantly bring up the negative. I am smart and I’d like to be regarded as such. I find that most of the students I have come into contact with not only embrace this reputation but perpetuate it. I get irritated when I see girls with buttons on their backpacks that say U Can Study Buzzed. I am spending a lot of money and doing a lot of work to just be made to feel like it doesn’t mean a thing. This may seem stupid but I feel that being comfortable with your environment is very important. Sadly, in senior year I thought UCSB was great… I hung a picture on my wall for inspiration and marveled at the blue skies, mountains and ocean. However, I unfortunately found out that reality did not match up with expectations- this is to be expected but the disparity was just a little too great…
I also wanted to shoot for a school with a better academic reputation.

Now in my second year, it is more about being closer to home. I am still shooting for prestigious universities but I also applied to UCR as back up (no offense). Of course UCLA would be AMAZING but it is a far reach. UCI, I feel, is beautiful. I visited the campus back in high school and felt like I fit right in. It was very quiet and chill, like me. Unfortunately, I got rejected. So now I am applying to UCLA and UCI for the second time around, hoping to get in this time. We’ll see how it goes. Worse case scenario I can go to UCR (although I don’t think I’d appreciate hearing UC Rejects all the time) or stay here at UCSB and just tough it out for only a couple more years. It’s really not as bad and you get used to it…the environment kind of grows on you…

I can tell you anything you want to know about UCSB; these days, I try to be more objective. A year ago, I would have went out of my way to persuade anyone contemplating UCSB to reconsider. Now I realize that everyone is different and UCSB, hate it or love it, is what it is.

@AllFieldsAreReq I am in a similar situation to you, trying to transfer from UCSC to UCSB. I know it’s considered a party school but I kinda figured it would be what you make it. Is the party scene REALLY in your face? I would probably live in a dorm if I got in.

^^I’m on the same boat about SB. I don’t mind the partying once in a while. Prefer to hang out with peeps who rather find fun in something else.

UCI is a commuter school, it becomes empty near and during the weekend. I use their libraries to study.

@Mikali No, the partying is not in your face. In fact, I live in the dorms right by IV, where all the college apartments are and all the parties happen. The only noise I hear is that of my own hall mates. Other than that, weekends are fine- not too crazy at all. It’s just college kids being kids. Mind you, I have never went deep into the IV party scene so maybe they do get a little bit crazy. But it is not like I have to go out of my way to avoid partying.
It’s mainly the reputation, what people say, how the students like that they are known for being beautiful and partying. It is all very superficial and I’d rather not be associated with it. Some parts of UCSB are okay; certain parts of campus are better than others.
And like I said, now my reasons for transferring are more for the sake of wanting to be closer to home.

@lawlking Yeah I have heard UCI is a commuter school. I am completely fine with this. If I get in, I actually plan on getting an apartment. If not, the deserted weekends won’t bother me. I rarely go out. I visited UCI on a Sunday and so I think I know what you are talking about. I barely saw anyone and that is what I liked. =]
I am aware that no school is perfect but the things that I have heard about UCLA and UCI aren’t too bad… I feel I’d be able to deal with it.

I sent UCLA a data change request through the link strive provided a week ago, but they never emailed me back…am I supposed to get an email reply? lol. Anyways, the course I told them I was going to take, I found out I didn’t need to take it anymore  yay! But now I don’t want to email them back telling them I don’t need it LOL bah, so I think I’m just going to update the TAU instead of confusing the hell out of them =/ did anyone get a reply from the data request? Just wondering.
