QuestBridge National College Match 2013-2014

Website is down for me :/

Yeah, the whole thing is down (most likely due to the obvious reason).

Kryanchun – I’ve noticed a lot of highly qualified applicants aren’t selected and my theory is that they’re turned down because QB thinks they’ll get admitted into those colleges without their padding. Someone on this website wrote that they were accepted RD to Stanford and weren’t selected as finalists (despite their <$20,000, single parent situation).

FINALIST!!!

@AqualH that sounds SO awesome Im definitely joining once I get home!!! I’ll have to reactivate my FB but I think it’ll be worth it!

Good work everyone!! Youre all the better for having gone through this app process no matter the result. ^_~

Finalist! Congrats to all those would are finalists, too. If you weren’t selected, it’s not even close to the end of the world. You’ll still qualify for application fee waivers from almost all of the partner colleges. Plus, now you can do ED or SCEA to your dream school! ;)

hey kryan, I’m in the same situation as you, I almost thought for sure I’d be a finalist but it turns out I’m not. Is there anything you think might’ve prevented us from becoming finalists?

@kryanchun
Can you think of any reason why they didn’t select you? I literally have the same stats as you and I got in.

I think we should all post our stats so future CC’ers or people who didn’t get in can compare. Ill go first.
finalist, 33ACT, <20k, no property, 3.75 unweighted, 4.1 weighted, lots of sports but no community service

I’m just utterly confused right now, and maybe it’s denial but I almost want to appeal and ask why I wasn’t chosen as a finalist.

Finalist

29 ACT
4.0 UW GPA
weak ECs
No APs or Honors, my school doesnt offer them
<20k/year
Class rank #1
Some extenuating circumstances… My father passed at an early age and my mom was a drug abuser.

31 ACT, <10k, 95k house, 4.0 unweighted, about a 4.5 weighted, plenty of EC, plenty of challenging courses. I thought I had great essays and whatnot but I suppose not since I’m not a finalist XD.

@Steven200796 @negativekarma,
I guess I was disadvantaged by my nationality/race in a large NY state pool.

I’m from PA and I’m the only asian in my all white school and one of the few in my all white town XD

If anyone could offer any insight as to why some people weren’t selected as finalists beyond the normal reasons, if you could please post it, I would appreciate that personally.

Finalist! Congradulations to finalists and good luck to others.

2290 SAT
4.0UW GPA
SAT II: Math-2 800, Physics 750, US History 620,

Good luck to all during their match processes or early/regulars!

Steven200796 – You can contact them and ask for why you weren’t personally selected (and tell them it’s so you can improve your RD application).

Someone should start an official finalist thread. :)

For those of you who did become finalists, did you also get the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE fee waivers?

Finalist! 32 act 9 aps by end of hs 3.81 uw gpa blah blah blah :D

I got finalist as well! Who here is participating in the match and who opted out? I personally opted out to pursue ED…

@Steven 200796, @ kryanchun and other non-finalists,
No one who wasn’t in the room when apps were discussed is going to be able to explain it to you. Every year this happens and many qualified applicants are baffled about their status. I’ve noticed that those who allow themselves to feel disappointed/sad/mad for a little while and then get on with applying to colleges (ED/EA or RD - whatever makes sense for you) have great outcomes. The students who get immersed in a ‘QB sucks’ funk or who take this as a final pronouncement don’t do as well.

If you are a member of the QB FB group you will see that many of the Questies who are mentoring this year’s applicants were not finalists last year, and yet they are attending QB partner schools and are still part of the QB ‘family’. And beyond that, past QB non-finalists have been admitted to the most selective colleges in early and regular rounds. Just today I’ve heard from 3 non-finalists last year who were admitted to UPenn early, Yale SCEA and Stanford REA. There are hundreds more. You should think of it this way: as a non-finalist you can still apply early to colleges just not through the match process, and many of the colleges ED/EA rounds have much higher admit rates than NCM.

Probably the biggest PITA is having to chase down the fee waivers that would have been automatic - but if you qualify, it isn’t a problem, just a little extra work. You can still get your application fees waived unless you are applying to a crazy number of colleges.

It’s natural to wonder why you weren’t chosen, but pls remember that the Questbridge staff is not a college admissions staff. They are a non-profit with their own agenda. Their choices are not predictive of what admissions counselors will decide so…be disappointed for a day and then proceed with your applications and prepare for success!
