Question about Admissions Decision

I applied to Mich probably around mid-october. By this time, I already had taken the SAT (1330- 620V/710M). In early October, I took the SAT again (1440- 640V/800M). I then sent them that score, but it was maybe a couple of weeks after the fact (probably late October).

In mid-December, I was deferred.

My question is: do you think my decision was based on my old SAT scores? Do you think they already had some idea in their mind before they saw the new scores? That being said, do I have a better chance in that regard when they look at my app again?

WOW! I am quite surprised youo didn't get in. I know a kid who got in with a 1300 (550 verbal) and a 88 average from new york.

dude, i was in the same exact boat as you- with the same exact scores! i first sent them my 1330, and after i found out i got a 1440 in october, i sent them asap. they had made their decision with my 1440 in february (although i applied in december) and i was deferred as well.

i hate to say this, but something tells me that if they hadnt seen your score before, it won't do much to change your app status. that's just judging from my personal dilemma.

I got in with a 1390 (and I was out of state). SATs aren't everything folks. It's only part of the whole application. Plus or minus 50 points means nothing.

That's exactly right Seven Nights. Michigan would rather accept a 3.8 student with a 1200 on the SAT than a 3.4 student with a 1400 on the SAT. Michigan's philosophy, and I agree with it, is that one test does not measure potential as well as 4 years of constent testing. Many students I knew at Michigan were kids from Michigan who knew they were going to attend Michigan. They loved the school, they loved the price and they loved the location (close to home). They were mostly 3.8+ students, had a bunch of 5s and 4s on their APs and couldn't care about the ACT/SAT. They would take the test without any preparation, get a 1300 (give or take a few) and knew they would most likely get in. Those kids, had they studied for the SAT would have easily gotten over a 1400. I would say that roughly half of the in-staters who go to Michigan approach their college applications.

Dude, what is your Michigan GPA?
