I want to do be involved in both neuroscience major (MCS-biological sciences) and as cognitive science (H&SS- psychology department but involves classes in the other departments as well) I'm applying for MCS so how would applying for double major later on work? Classes for both majors overlap but the requirement courses are quite different, how would I be taking them for both freshmen and sophomore year.

You should consider applying to both MCS and H&SS - take a look at the Science and Humanities Scholars Program: [SHS - Science and Humanities Scholars Program](CMU - Science and Humanities Scholars Program - Carnegie Mellon University)

Also, you can definitely double major outside of your “home” college, but ^ might be your best bet :)

I’ll look at that program thanks, but in early decision you’re only allowed to apply to one school. :\ Of course I can also also apply for H&SS for regular decision afterwards, but I’m not sure how the whole process works…

bumping this topic…
adding on to my question so it’s more understandable, if plan you do a double major from different schools, how do you fulfill the requirements for both majors?

There are no real ‘requirement’ courses to declare a major (or double major.) Certain departments are picky about choosing whom they allow to declare – like CS or HCI – and will want to see that you have taken some of the preliminary courses in the major to make sure that you know what you’re getting into and are doing well. However, to my knowledge, neither cog sci or bio are competitive majors.

Keep in mind also that you will have to fulfill the gen ed requirements of whichever college is your home college, so you should think hard about which college you want to apply to under Early Decision. For example, I am an H&SS student with a double major in SCS; I have to complete all of H&SS’s gen ed requirements. If I were an SCS student with a double major in H&SS, I’d have to fulfill all of SCS’s gen ed requirements instead.

ah I see, but wouldn’t you technically need to take the general ed requirements when double majoring in H&SS or any other school. ex.) when you major in cog sci? I mean, advanced programming and cognitive psychology classes, is it ok to just not take the requirement courses and go on to your major? I don’t get how it works out by just skipping the requirement courses.

but can I take some requirement courses from H&SS if I’m in MCS for the first year…

I think you’re confusing requirement courses and gen ed courses. Gen ed courses are courses not necessarily related to your major which you must fulfill to be a more ‘rounded’ student. For example, in HSS, that would include statistics, world history, a freshman seminar, interpretation & argument, a modern language… the list goes on. However, a requirement course is a course which your major requires for completion. I am a creative writing student, so some of my basic requirement courses are the Survey of Forms courses that all fresh/soph CW majors take in order to be allowed to take Workshop courses later on. See the difference? :)

You need to take all the required courses for your major(s), but not the geneds for your second major.

ah I see (:
sorry for harping repetitive questions, but this is what I was confused at… when would you take the required courses then if you apply to one school? Would you take your requirements for your second major after you declare your second major?
