My S will be in Virginia and he wants to bring a TV and XBox (of course!), but I'm not sure where it would go. What furniture do they have in Virginia? A bed, dresser, desk and night stand?? I'm guessing - can anyone confirm? Where do kids put the TV? I've also been checking out the Bed, Bath & Beyond ads and they have some cool stuff (storage stuff, hutches, book shelves). Is any of this needed? I'm trying not to go into crazy mom overload mode;)

If you look under Residence Life @ Elon University on facebook there are pictures of the different residence halls -

I was wondering about the hutch also - I guess it depends on how they arrange the furniture and if they loft their bed’s or not???

I am going to be a sophmore next year at Elon. Last year I lived in HBB (truthfully I never set foot in Virginia) but most of the dorm lay-outs are similar. I believe Virginia there will be two beds, two desk, and two dressers. One option to save space is to loft the beds and put the desk/dresser underneath although a lot of people are weary of falling off. In terms of the tv/xbox, you can stack the fridge/microwave and put the tv on top or use one of the desks. I don’t believe there will be room for a bookshelf although if the room is large enough I had one last year and it was great for saving shelf space. The big thing is to get multi-purpose furniture, like little foot stools that double as a place to put clothes or hanging closet shelves.

My D is Elon’14. She is fairly sure that Virginia, like West and Carolina, has high ceilings. So it would be possible to put the hutch on the desk and still fit it under a lofted bed. (D tried to do that in her room in old Moffit and although the bed would loft high enough to fit the desk & hutch, it only left her about 18 inches of clearance between the top of the mattress and the ceiling. But old Moffit didn’t have high ceilings. She and her roommate ended up with one desk under a lofted bed and one desk that wasn’t).

Some students at Elon who have their bed lofted really high grab an extra metal “crossbar” from the pile of bed-lofting pieces that are placed in the hall/stairs of each dorm on move-in day, and put the extra crossbar above their mattress as a bed rail. (But then again D says she’s not sure if Virginia has the loftable beds with the metal crossbars, like most dorms, or the loftable beds that are all wood, which a few dorms have.)

So I guess this post isn’t really that helpful… sorry! Your son may just have to play it by ear and figure it out when he sees the room. I’m pretty sure all the rooms have enough floor space that he doesn’t have to loft the bed over his desk unless he wants to.

Thank you everyone - very helpful information! I also called Elon and found out that the window sizes are posted on the Elon Residence Life webpage (for curtains), they have cable TV in the dorms (even some HBO channels) and the closets are fairly big in Virginia.

Lafalum - I’m not sure if my S is going to loft his bed, but that is good information just in case. I’m thinking about the shelf type thing that goes over the bed instead of the desk hutch. It’s the over the bed space saver at B,B&B. Don’t think it would work with a lofted bed.

RVA892 - Like your idea of hanging closet shelves and ideas about where to put the TV. Thanks!

Can someone comment about the best way to hang curtains since we cannot use nails? D is in Colonnades–not sure if the window is recessed and a springrod would work or if we’d need something else. Any advice is appreciated.

I called to ask about curtains in Virginia Hall and they said to use a spring (tension) rod. I’m not sure if that would work in the Colannades windows.

That thiggamagiggy thing that goes over the bed (BBB) is fine if your kid is careful; my D knew kids who hated it because stuff would fall down on them in the middle of the night…

If I’m not mistaken, most dorms have a window shade already there of some sort…blinds etc…

My son was in Virginia last year. He had a tv/nintendo. He and his roommate had their beds against opposite walls(one to the left of the door when you come in, and the other below the window). They put both desks along the wall in between, and there was just enough room in between the desks for a small cart with drawers–the kind you can find at bbb that is plastic and on wheels…His 20" tv fit perfectly on top of that. He did need a long cable cord, since the cable outlet in his room was over near the door. His dresser was at the foot of his bed, between the bed and bathroom door. Can’t remember where his roommate’s dresser was…The fourth wall has no room for much of anything since it has the sink and the closet doors–although they did have their micro-fridge next to the sink.

I did have reservations at first about him having a tv/video game, but he is a conscientious worker. It ended up being a great ice-breaker. Just tell your son to leave his door open whenever he is just hanging out/playing video games and he will meet lots of people!

Great advice!

Rodney - maybe we will have to pass on the BBB shelf - although it is cool. Doesn’t sound too stable if things are falling down.

Also, there are blinds on the windows, but they are not room darkening.

3garcons - will tell S to leave the door open when playing his games - good idea!
