Hey everyone! I am a prospective student of the University of Pittsburgh and I was wondering whether it is possible to double/dual major (what's the difference?) between colleges. For example, could I do Industrial Engineering and Philosophy? Or would that be impossible? Thank for your answers!!

Double majors have more overlap, like psychology and sociology. Your engineering and philosophy idea would be a dual major because they don’t share as many requirements that overlap. Engineering has a lot of requirements, so it would not be as easy as some. I do know a young man who is majoring in engineering and minoring is sociology.

If you start with the idea of the dual major, you will be able to figure out how difficult it will be. You will also figure out whether you really want both majors. If you have some AP credit, that might help.

Okay as long as they allow that to occur then that is great. I’ll try and see whether the credits will all work out since I believe IE is a low(er) time intensive engineering major than others. Thanks!

Expect to take at LEAST a fifth year to graduate if you’re double majoring between schools. The IE major will take at least 7 semesters. Your major in A&S (in this instance, Philosophy) might have some rules about whether you can use your engineering classes towards your philosophy degree. Because A&S has their own rigorous set of requirements for Gen Eds, not everything will be covered, and some majors don’t let you “double-dip” (i.e. using requirements from one major in another major as well).

I honestly don’t know a lot of people who double majored outside of Engineering. A lot of people manage to fit a minor in because they can use the minor as part of their engineering degree (in terms of elective requirements) without needing all the extra A&S requirements.
