Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, but I have a question about the MIT long essay. I did the second topic, "We'd like to know a bit more about your world." etc etc. I wrote the essay about art, but I am most interested in their engineering department and I put that on the app. Is that too irrelevant, since I'm not a fine arts major?

Well, I when I was looking at the question, It seemed like the most important part was how your world shaped your dreams and aspirations. If your dreams lie in art, go ahead. MIT makes everyone apply undecided, so I don't think it matters as much what department you're interested in.

No, it is not irrelevant. MIT IMO wants people who can appreciate and contribute to the wider MIT community, as well as study and learn in their chosen discipline(s).

Hmm okay thanks =)

Of course it's not irrelevant!! MIT is looking for people who are interested in a variety of disciplines and studies. That said, I think it would actually help you. Best of luck!

i wanted to be a bioengineer and wrote about singing. heehee, they like engineers who break the typical "nerd" mold (so to speak). I read an essay somewhere about an EE major who loved to sew. go figure =)
