Hi everyone
I am a junior who is about to start the two years of IB diploma
I'm Japanese and my school offers A1Japanese HL
However, if i take this course, i would have to forgo taking french sl.
Do u guys think that taking french sl will look more impressive even though
taking japese a1 HL will make me have 4HLs?
I really can't decide because although japanese will make me get an easy A,
i am not sure if that's really worth my time since I am completely fluent in japnese
due to my 4years in local japnese school.

Also do colleges value EnglishA1 SL much more than English A2HL?

personally, i’d go with japanese HL. french is not as applicable, especially if you’re applying to the states for college. you’re in japan, so it’s smarter.

First, I would only recommend taking two languages if you aren’t really interested in them. Colleges in the states don’t care about English SL vs. HL, so take your pick. And, are you taking Japanese A1 or B? If it’s A1 or A2, then you’re analyzing literature, so it wouldn’t be an “easy A”. If it’s B, on the other hand, I would encourage you to take the French SL class as an actual second language, if you are fluent in Japanese.

Thanks for your replies:) I was talking about A1 Japanese and I am not in Japan right now…
however, I was scholarized in a Japanese school, and it is my first language
so I was wondering, if taking french would look better in my transcript
because languages are one of my "EC"s…but for the sake of my GPA,
Japanese would be better;;

Just like zakuropanda stated - A1 courses are not language courses They are literature courses. So even though you are fluent in the language you can still fail the subject if you don’t grasp how to analyze literature! Those who take an A1 course are supposed to be fluent in that language. So it is definitely not an easy A (or 7 in this context). A2 courses are also literature courses although they’re slightly less advanced (not as many works to read).

As far as French B goes, it could be a nice add to your resume. Note that most colleges require a few years of a foreign language so that might be a good choice. However you still have to choose an A1 course either way, so I don’t understand why this would complicate you taking French B?

Also having 4 HLs is harder than having the standard 3HLs so you could get a plus for choosing a heavier work load.

I would still be taking A1 English because my counseler said that my English is fluent enough to enroll in that course;;
the only thing is that if I take Japanese A1, I would have no space for foreign languages
since I take two humanities subjects;;
and my counseler keeps saying that american colleges don’t really appreciate native speakers taking their own languages as an academic subject
so she strongly discourages me from taking japanese;;;

Listen to and don’t second guess your counselor. Forget about “easy” As when you’re applying to selective American colleges. Rigorous core courses are what’s admission criteria is about.
