If I took 3 years of Japanese courses at a community college before transferring to UCI, would those courses be counted in my credit towards graduation, and would I have to take a Japanese placement test?

Have you tried checking assist.org? I’m pretty sure 3 yrs of Jap taken at a CC is transfereable. Don’t know about the placement test.

Yes.

It doesn’t say how it would be transferred, though.

You should talk to your counselor or one in the Japanese department. But anyway, how it worked out for me, was that since I had 2 SEMESTERS in foreign language, it put me at the second year or 2A level. If you went to a school the had quarter schedule and and have 3 quarters, then you’re also at the 2A level. Try signing up for the class, but if it won’t let you, there may be a block which needs to be removed by the counselor. This should have happened when you went to the transfer seminar thing to first sign up for classes.

Also, it may be best just to take the placement test if you’ve had 3 years and feel confident in your skills. That way, you can get placed at a higher level and maybe have to take only 1 quarter out of the normal 3 of the second language year schedule.
