I was signing up for classes, and I was wondering what LS3A-Lab was. I thought LS3 had a lab section already built into it, much like LS1 and 2? And when I click on it, the time description is "Unscheduled". Mysterious...
Am I witnessing the birth of some new LS system where they separate the labs from the lectures entirely? I went to the LS Core website but I see no new info about this, so if any of you have heard anything, please share :) Thanks.

The Life Science Dept decided to split the labs from LS 2 and LS 3 and combine just the labs into “LS 23L,” but because there were a bunch of people who had taken LS 2 with lab but not LS 3 with lab, they decided to keep LS 3 with lab for this upcoming Fall Quarter. That means when you enroll in LS 3 for Fall 2011, you also have to enroll in LS 3A (the “lab” portion). After the fall, both LS 2 and LS 3 will not offer the lab period.

From what I understand, LS 3A doesn’t have a “meeting time” because it takes place in your discussion for LS 3.

Unitwise, I believe LS 2 and 3 are both 4 units, and LS 23L is 2 units (1 unit of “lab” from each course). For the fall, LS 3A is 1 unit.

Normally, LS2 and LS3 has been known to have lecture and a lab course embedded into the course, each course worth 5 units. However, many students are unable to attend LS2 or LS3 because not only are they an impacted class, but also because Lab space is limited and it is hard to work your entire schedule around one lab class. Therefore, starting 2011 Fall quarter, the LS2 (normally with lab) has been cut into just LS2 (without lab).

However, LS3 still has a Lab for Fall 2011 only. This process allows students that have taken LS2 (with lab) in Spring/Summer to get the chance to take LS3 with Lab. That way, those students will not have to take LS23, specifically a lab class that they have taken in the LS2 and LS3 with the labs.

Starting Winter 2012, LS2 and LS3 will not have labs and will be 4 units each. Additionally you will need to take the LS23 (lab-oriented course) and you will receive 2 units. Altogether every student before and after the “lab dropping change” will receive a total of 10 units.

Now that I have made this point, I will tell you why there is a LS3A. The school system forgot that LS3 had a lab class and this is probably the fault of the school administration. This resulted in showing a 4 unit class. But wait, there is a lab in LS3 this fall. Since there are students already enrolled in LS3 (with lab), it would prove difficult if the administration dropped LS3, thereby dropping all the students with it. So to make things easier, those who are already enrolled into LS3, will just sign up with LS3A to get that extra one unit, which is the “lab unit”. Basically it’s a administrative thing. You’ll probably see LS3A only in this quarter. It’ll probably be gone forever unless they do this administrative mistake again.

So by the end of this summer of I will have ls2 lab credits, but I couldn’t get into ls3 for the fall. Does anyone know if ls2 lab credits can be transferred to ls23L so I would just have to do the ls3 lab portion. It would be dumb for me to have to do the ls2 labs all over again

I believe if you call the Life Science administrator or contact one of the two professors you will get in since most or all of the LS3 classes are either full or overfull

@Noxfinitie: I signed up for other classes which now conflict with the times for both LS3 lectures unfortunately.

@Noxfinitie &UCLA2014: Thank you for the information! I’m still a little confused about the order in which we take those classes. I mean, if you sign up for LS23L you have to do labs for both LS2 and LS3? Will LS2 be a prereq for LS23L?

@brosiedon: Same with me! I am taking LS2 in Session C right now and we still have lab.
I’m guessing (hoping?) that we can skip the labs in LS23L and just show up to the LS3 labs only (much like how students who repeat LS2 can transfer their lab credits).

@GiaNewtenmeyer: If you haven’t taken any LS2 or LS3 classes yet, you have to take LS2 and then LS3 for the lectures. In regards for when to take LS23L, I believe you can take it at the same time as LS3 lecture or basically anytime after LS3.

@brosiedon & GiaNewtenmeyer: I would suggest talking to them and telling them about your conflict. If your other time conflict can be dropped, like a GE or something, or if the class can be rearranged, you should ask the counselor if they can switch you into a different section/lecture/etc. I do not know your specific situation so I cannot give you more details in how to help you. I hope you look around to see each class and what you can switch around. I believe that the counselors are required to let you into LS3, but keep in mind it has a lab class so you would want to take this class if you have taken LS2 with the lab too. Furthermore, don’t forget about final conflicts if there are any. Goodluck guys!

@Gia: I’ve emailed the ls core department to see what they are going to do about students who have already taken ls2 with lab, whether our units will transfer…still waiting on a reply but I’ll post their reply once i get it

They said our units will transfer and we will only have to complete the LS3 portion of the lab for 1 unit

@brosiedon: Thanks so much for looking into it!
