Right now I am a freshman at Boston University, and I'm applying to Emory, Brown, and Penn.
Penn and Emory both require the mid-term grade report (even though Emory sent me a letter in the mail saying my application was complete?).
It was all going fine until today when I got a grade out of nowhere on econ dropping it to a B (if I had it filled out yesterday it would have been an A- ><)
So here is what my midterm report looks like. This semester I also overloaded my schedule (20 credits), so it's obviously going to be difficult to maintain the 3.85 I had last semester.
Microeconomics: B
Western Modern World: A
Research Writing: A
Breaks w/ Tradition (Humanities): A-
International Relations: A-
with a comment "excellent so far in a challenging course".

So will this mid-term report/the B hurt my chances of getting into these schools?
Since Brown doesn't require it, should I not send it because of the B? What should I do about Emory since my application is apparently complete?
I'll be able to get the grade up in the long-run, but not until I take my final.

Hey colinrice. I’m also applying to Brown. If these grades are much better than your previous semester marks I would go ahead and send them. However, if they are more or less on par with what you’ve been getting I wouldn’t bother.

I would give the schools a call. Since you are a freshman applicant and therefore have significantly less grades for the schools to look at, a mid-term report might be beneficial when they are reviewing your application. I’m a junior level transfer and I sent in my winter quarter grades to all of my schools, even though they didn’t ask for them. I am just of the thought that providing additional positive information shows your dedication to the school and cannot hurt you in any way. Also, I really don’t think one B is going to be a big deal, especially since it’s just a mid-term report. You should definitely call them asap though.

I have a couple of somewhat related questions:

1) Is it too late to send in a mid-term grade report? Will the schools be able to evaluate the report along with the rest of the application materials this late into April?
2) What are we supposed to do about the top portion of the mid-term report form where they ask us if we’ve waived our right to access the report? It is even possible to get your professors to sign this form without looking at it and taking it from professor to professor?

Thanks so much for the help guys.
I ended up sending it to all my schools, I figure it can’t really hurt me since I’m showing consistency while challenging myself, taking the hardest courses available.
I got some more nice comments too, so I decided why not.
