As always posting on behalf of dd who will be a fy in the fall.

If she has taken AP Psychology(not sure of score yet) does she have to/should she still take Intro to Psych? The next course in the sequence is Statistical Methods for Undergraduate Research. Not sure if she wants to jump into that pool in her first semester!

I think APs are great for students to challenge themselves in high school, but I would not use them across the board to move onto the next tier of classes in college. There is something to be said for everyone having the same intro course so they can all have the same foundation as they move to the next level. That said, my daughter took AP Calc and after careful conversation with the prof moved onto Calc II and did wonderfully.

There should be info about the Psych Department’s policy on AP classes on the department’s web page, but in general you can’t use an AP course to pass out of a required intro course for your major. If she’s even thinking about majoring in psych, she should take intro psych to get it out of the way and keep the option open. Especially as I think they only offer intro psych in the fall.

At one point D had grumbled that she hadn’t taken AP Econ in high school. Later she was very glad she hadn’t, the grounding at Smith was so much better.

With AP classes, they won’t count the units but in some cases they will allow their use as prerequisites.

Boss, the Statistical Methods class…if it’s the one I’m thinking of…is actually fairly tame. Check that, its eyes-closed simple if you have any feel for quant at all, can be a grind otherwise. Is the course number 190?

Free advice to Gov majors: think three times before taking American Political Thought your first or second semester. Lots of sophs and juniors and you’re likely to be heavily outgunned in terms of reading capacity and writing ability. (Could vary with the Prof; D’s prof taught a great class but it was one of the hardest she took in four years at Smith, up there with Complex Analysis and Modern British Fiction.)

Well Dad for dd anything math-related is like kryptonite to Superman…so…no chance she’d find that one “easy.” But thanks for the heads up, yeah it’s 190. If she does decide to major in Psych she’ll have to take it.

S&P I they don’t specifically mention AP on the Psych web site but do state that the intro course is required for the major so I guess that answers the question.

She’s not sure what she wants to major other than possibly theatre and possibly either Psych or English. She wants to dip her toes in the water at first so the intro course is probably her best bet. Thanks all for the responses.

Just a quick thanks to all those continuing to help first years and parents with their sage advice.

My D has yet to fully engage in her upcoming life at Smith, and this helicopter Dad is trying to remain understanding of her focusing instead on her last summer with her friends (weighing preparing for impending college life vs. the immediacy of the 100th senior party seems a bit simple to me, but apparently I am so out of it).

However, I am very pleased that I can direct her here for the advice I don’t have…yet would have to be dismissed anyway if sourced (even indirectly) from her so totally out of touch Dad.

“You can tell a Smithie…but not much.” I wonder, does that begins on the day of acceptance to Smith?..if not, perhaps its one of the attributes the admin committee can sense from an applicant? Regardless, while pleased at the confidence that grows in my D, I am reassured she has a network that can provide advice apparently no blood relative can give!
