What's the etiquette about a high school student in a college class asking their teacher for a recommendation? I'm in a couple this year and my dad told me that I should try and get to know the professor and be active in class so I could ask for a recommendation. Do college professors write recommendations for high school students?

(I have no idea if this is the right section)

College profs who are impressed by their hs students are often happy to write recs. Usually this requires interacting with the prof outside of class as well as in it. Maybe stop by office hours and chat (about academic matters and your interests, if possible) a few times before deciding about asking for a rec.

@niceday Can I ask what you mean by talking with him about my interests? I don’t want to seem like I’m only coming to chat just so he’ll write me a recommendation

I can’t tell you how to start a conversation without knowing you and the other person. All I can say is you should be prepared to ask specific questions with the intent of starting a dialogue. Don’t concern yourself with impressing the prof. It’s fine to admit weaknesses, ask for help or direction, and show that you are full of questions.
