Hello all! I'm trying to decide whether or not to retake the SATs. The score I got was a 2020 (720 W, 680 M, 620 CR). I'm happy with my writing and math scores but it's that darn 620 in critical reading I'm worried about. It's techincally in the range for my top choice school, but it's under the 25% score of 640.
I was hoping to sort of "plead my case" at an interview and explain that I clearly can "critically read" so to speak since I haven't gotten less than an A once in my AP literature class this year and I'm feeling great about the test.
Also, I'm taking the Literature subject test in June and I'm feeling really confident. I have taken several practice tests and I do really well.
If I do well on the SAT Subject test AND I get a 5 on the AP Lit exam, do you think my explanation will make sense?
Also, I HATE the SAT. Hate it, hate it, hate it. And I don't want to retake it but I don't want to score to hurt me in the long run.
Help?

I would retake it for sure. Try the ACT. The reading is WAY easier. I got a 31 compared to a pathetic 600 (If i took the test today, Id get a 640…)

If you’re applying to your typical state school, you don’t need to retake it…well actually you should get it to at least 670 a section to maximize your chances, so yeah, get on that CR score yo…And if you are applying to top tier schools like HYPSMC then you’ll definitely need to raise it up to at least 760 a section

^ well I’m not applying to a typical state school. My current top choices are Scripps and Smith. I have other credentials like a great GPA and a lot of extracurricular activities. I have asked my chances on both of the individual boards for those topics and gotten positive feedback. But something about my one low score really freaks me out.

i think you’re fine for those schools. Maybe try ACT.
