Question about switching into the College of Chemical and Life Sciences...

I'm currently in Letters and Sciences because I was undecided when I applied, but I know for sure I want to be a biology major. Probably cell bio and genetics but I have time to explore... I have my schedule made and everything, and I placed into Math 140. For Bio majors, the required math is 130 however the advisor called the department asking if I am able to take this course, and they said I couldn't since I wasn't in the major yet. Therefor my advisor placed me into 220 because she said it satisifies Bio majors. Is this definitely accurate? I don't want to have to retake math but I don't want to take 140 if it isn't necessary. Any help would be great!

Also, does anyone know the process of switching colleges, maybe particularly from L&S to CLFS? My advisor noted on my shete that a BSCI major can be declared at anytime? I will give them a call probably in the week when I have time but I was just wondering for now if anyone has any experience/advice so I could tweak my schedule accordingly since classes go fast.

thanks!!

on my sheet*

If you can look online and see who the advisor is for BSCI, you could email that person and start the dialog…that you want to declare it as a major, and your question about Math… As long as regular orientations are going on, you’ll be able to get into the Math course you want/need, but the time of day/choice of instructors may be less than optimal. They will open additional math sections if they are needed for incoming freshmen.

[How to become a CLFS major | University of Maryland College Chemical & Life Sciences](http://chemlife.umd.edu/undergraduate/advising/howtobecomeaclfsmajor)

you can always try to email an advisor in that college to find out too.

Wow I didn’t even know MATH130 existed. Must be new. I know 220 is what all the non ENGR, non CMPS majors used to take. So it should still be fine.

Thanks for all of the responses! I have called a number of different departments and advisors, and I can confidently say that EVERY single one of them has told me something different! My advisor said 220 would be find, but the directer of undergrad. studies for my intended major said that I would have to retake the 130.

I talked to two advisors from the Bio department, one said that 140 would satisfy a life sciences major, while the other one said that I could take 140 first semester but switch into 131 second? *This would mean getting a Calc book for first semester, then spending more $ to get a Calc for Life Sciences book second semester…hmm…

**By the way, I’m taking an Internal Transfer Workshop first week of fall to switch colleges

I decided to enroll in the 140. Though I don’t intend on any of the majors it is really meant for…I am so confused- but this goes to show you should always get 2nd, 3rd, even 4th opinions on everything b/c not everyone is always on the same page.

And on that note I was also wondering… The difference between 130 and 140- is one significantly more challenging? Will I be lost later on if I don’t take the 130?

If your switching into the life sciences college then I think you need to set up a meeting. They go through all the info and then you can switch.

As long as your not a chem major (biochem as well I think) you can take any of the Math classes, 130-131, 140-141, or 220-221. Math130 is supposedly much easier than the others, followed by 220 and then 140. They cover the same basic things but the differences
when you look at the depth of content explored. I like to think of Math220 as a lighter version of Math140 and Math130 is a lighter version as well but the difference is that it’s specifically meant for Bio Majors. I’m pretty sure all 3 use different books, I know 220 and 140 do.

I wouldn’t advise on taking one group of classes and switching to another as it isn’t cost effective in the end.

I took 140 when I had to select my classes since it is valid all across the board. 220 won’t work for some majors and 130 is restricted to bio majors…

140 does satisfy the requirement for bio majors, but it is a lot harder than 130.
From what CLFS gave me yesterday, it seems like 220 also fills the requirement, and I think it’s lighter than both because I placed into 140, but was advised by many to take 130 if I planned on medical school. 220 was never mentioned as an option.
Are you allowed to hold off on taking math until 2nd semester when you’ll be in the right school?
