so i've been working on my $10 essay...and i just wrote about everyday things that i love to do (tennis, playing with my band, etc), and the main concern i have is that the whole thing seems to be written pretty informally, especialy compared to other essays and essays for other schools. so i was just wondering how your all's were written...were they also in a fairly informal tone or not? thanks guys...hope you can help.

every single essay for every single school of mine was informal, i think it lends to seem more personal

I think that that John Hopkins created the essay to better understand your everyday life, something that is truly you; so you seem to be on the right track

yeah, i guess i was just getting paranoid about it, mostly because all of my counselors and teachers say things like "the colleges use the essay to get a better view of who you are, but also to see what type of level you write." and i was just worried that not randomly throwing in 8 syllable words and such would make them think "clearly, this kid can't write at a college level." AHH...stress, dont ya love it?

I agree 100% with Caligirl510. Stick with the informal "who you are" essay as that is what the Hopkins adcoms will find more useful. The $10 essay is not a traditional writing sample. It is supposed to be creative, original and unique.

Definately write in your own voice. Adcoms know how teens talk and 8 syllable words are not part of our day to day vocabulary. They've read plenty of essays created to impress them so they know when applicants are faking.

hey wat did u guys write 4 the 10 dollar essay

how did u manage to miss that thread?

oh duhh!! haha thnx
