Hi, I’m an international student applying to Dartmouth College next year. Regarding the TOEFL requirement, I found this on their website:
If your first language is not English, you are required to take either the TOEFL or IELTS. If you attend an English-speaking school, then we will waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. The vast majority of students admitted to Dartmouth score better than a 100 on the TOEFL exam, or better than 7 on IELTS.
I attended a US high school for the last 2 years (from my sophomore year). Dartmouth didn’t specify the number of years, it just stated “If you attend an English-speaking school” (Other colleges usually required 2, 3 or even 4 years). So am I eligible for the Toefl waiver? I don’t want to take the test; it’s so expensive.
Thanks!
Are you currently an English Language Learner student? Have you tested/demonstrated proficiency out of ELL at your high school? If you can show proof that you have demonstrated proficiency in English, by passing your state’s exam (in NY, it is the NYESLAT) it will strengthen your case for a waiver. If you have not tested out of ESL, you will most likely have to take the TOEFL
Oh okay, thanks. The only English proficiency I took is SLEP (not sure if it’s worth anything, cuz it’s much easier (and much cheaper :P) than TOEFL. My US high school did not even have ESL classes :-? And in Nebraska, there wasn’t any state exam either. I have a 690 SAT CR, 740 Writing (8 essay) and 34 ACT Reading, 35 ACT English though.
ESL if federal title III funding. Somewhere the state of Nebraska has a process for ESL students starting with home language assessement, when you first enrolled in the Nebraska public school system to exams that demonstrate proficiency. If your school does not have this and have no way to determine that you, being an non-native English speaker are proficient in the english language, you may have to take the TOEFL
Your best bet would be to ask Dartmouth directly about your situation
Ok thank you @sybbie719, I’ll try contacting them
