Question About Transferring to UVA

Hi, I am considering applying to UVA for the spring semester. I have 51 credits right now and will have 63 or 66 come spring semester. I have a 4.0 average in my current school (CUNY in NY) and good E.C.s so I’m confident I will be accepted into the school.

The issue is that I want to go to McIntire, which only accepts fall transfers. Additionally, I don’t have the required courses (And my school doesn’t offer equivalent prerequisites to be accepted straight into McIntire). So my question is, can I switch to UVA in the spring and take the required prereqs in the spring semester and then internally transfer into McIntire for the fall semester?

Thanks in advance!

The application process for McIntire takes place in the spring semester, so you wouldn’t have time to get your prerequisites done. Perhaps the minor or 5th year option is a better way to incorporate work in McIntire into your program. Is there another major that might be of interest?

You need to take all the prerequisites before you enter the Comm school in the fall, not before you apply. In exceptional circumstances, you could take one or two during the summer after you have already been accepted. I can’t say this happens with any regularity, though… Maybe you could talk to the admissions deans at McIntire? Just send them an email, they tend to be pretty helpful. I’m sure you could take some courses at a community college, although if you are missing a lot it probably isn’t possible.

I’d be entering the school in the Spring semester, I’d need two additional classes to get into McIntire, so I’d easily complete them by the Fall semester (I’d do them in spring).

My office does the transfer admission review for McIntire. The McIntire admit rate for transfer is about 16%. To be competitive, you should do as much as you can to get those prerequisites done or have them on your transcript in progress when you apply.

In rare cases, transfer students have been allowed to take a course or two over the summer for McIntire.

If you search on the transfer blog, you can see this addressed by one of the transfer deans.
