Question about Video Games

As a bit of background information, I am an incoming freshman attending Cal Poly SLO in the fall, and I am going to be living in the Fremont dorm hall.

I’ve been browsing this web site, and from what I have seen, the general consensus about video games is that they are a good thing in moderation. However, I am currently an active gamer, and I believe that I can keep gaming in college while in college. The major thing that is concerning me is that I like to voice chat with friends on video games such as WoW on my PC, and Call of Duty on my PS3. I also like to make frequent Skype calls to my out of state friends. So my question is, in the dorms, how can I maintain playing games / skyping with friends and family without being a major nuisance to my two roommates? (I am living in a triple) Is there some way / some place that I can go to game on my laptop without annoying anybody? How have you other, if any, gamers upheld your gaming lives in the dorms! Thanks in advance!

Well, if Fremont is anything like Cerro Vista, there is no wi-fi in the dorms. You have to bring your own ethernet cable just to get internet. Not sure if you would be able to do it in a “common area” such as the community center. I guess this is a real bring-down for gamers…then again I could be wrong…

The ability to be an online video gamer and Skype at will is not an issue in most dorms. By the way, Skype for some reason is not that great in the red brick dorms. ooVoo works far better. Just bring a headset and keep your voice down. Just the fact that you asked means that you care how others feel. The real issue is to make school your top priority and do not forget to join clubs and be active on campus. I know of kids that ended up on academic probation and basically meeting NOBODY after their first quarter due to unrestrained online gaming mostly with buddies from high school. If you take your classes seriously, you will participate in these activities with moderation. If you become a nuisance, no worries. Your roommates will definitely let you know one way or another.
