question for anybody....especially alexandre! last date to hear?

Hi everybody,

I am a deferred applicant...michigan is my first choice school and i applied WAY WAY back on august 19th and app was completed in august itself so basically i am dying. I was wondering if anyone knew what the last possible date would be for michigan to make their decision about me? i've heard conflicting things: i've heard april 1, i've heard may 1, and i've heard that they can tell me whenever they feel like it so....anyone know for sure?

well the last possible date for defer-ees hear back from mich is april 15th so it's reasonable to say they make all decisions by then.

Deferred applicants hear back with the rest of the students...by April 10. Either you get accepted, rejected or wait-listed.

If you check their Common Data Set, they've never in that history admitted anyone off the wait list. I feel they really should use it to avoid the over-admission problem they had last year.

bianchi, where can i find their common data set?

I know they've admitted some engineering students off of the wait list in fairly recent history (like, within last five years). Of course, waitlist people will hear after May 1st, after deposits are due.

that data is incorrect. I know of two peopple from my school who were admitted off the deferred list last year and one who was admitted about two weeks ago. now i don't know if deferred and waitlist are the same thing or not but thats hte information i have from my college counselor (and i kno she's right)

No, deferred and wait list are not the same. It would take too long to explain the differences, but they aren't the same.

It doesn't take long at all. Deferred means they haven't made a decision yet, but will before the deadline. Waitlisted means that the class is full, but you were on the border so they made a list (if you accept being on it) that they would take students from if not enough of their regular admits enrolled.

I know lots of people admitted after being deferred. I know none that were admitted after being waitlisted. I have been following UofM admissions since 1997.

but is there definitely little chance
of getting in after being deferred?

No. It's hard to say. Generally, the University is able to go back to some of the students whose decisions were deferred and admit them later in the cycle.

The last two years have been an entirely different ball game, so I wouldn't speculate on chances. There's no "definitely" to go by.
