Super weird question, did anyone receive a package from Northeastern in early November that contained a leather portfolio with northeastern university inscribed on it? I received one and forgot about it until I was accepted NUin early action last week. I spoke to a friend I knew who got deferred and a friend I knew who also got in early action and neither of them received this portfolio. It was just an odd thing to send to a lot of people because it seems like a nice portfolio. So I’m wondering if there’s some odd significance to it or if they sent it to a bunch of students.
I did, too! I remember thinking that it was odd (and thinking what was I going to do with a mini portfolio?). All I had done at that point was add NEU to my Common App and partake in a bit of light research. Not sure if they sent it as incentive to follow through and apply or something like that. A bunch of my friends received it as well, and some didn’t even end up applying (we are in VT for reference, as it may have been application incentive for our region?). All of my guessing is speculation, of course.
And I was accepted EA last week, too.
S. also received portfolio and was accepted to N.U.in EA. I am fairly sure portfolio was sent to students who achieved above a certain score on the PSAT. S has friends in his class who are twins and neither demonstrated any interest in NU (both applied to only LACs). One received the portfolio and the other didn’t even though they both have significantly higher GPAs than S. The one who did not receive the portfolio scored much lower than S. on PSAT (he ended up doing well on SATs after studying) and the one who did receive the portfolio has the identical composite score as S. So that’s my theory anyway.
D was admitted but did not receive a portfolio. She never took the SAT, but her PSAT score was meh. I’m curious - how does a school see a student’s PSAT score?
Honestly my PSAT score was “meh,” too (1290), so I wonder if it even has to do with that. I also thought the PSAT wasn’t accessible by colleges so I, too, wonder how they would get them.
My son actually got two for some reason. Accepted ED. High PSAT score.
Interesting! Received it as well and EA accepted. Also a high PSAT score
That’s so strange! I had decent PSAT scores, but the friend of mine who got in EA also had better scores than I did and did not receive a portfolio. I am from MA so we wondered if it was just a regional representative who sent them out, but I’m the only one from MA who I know that received one.
From what I have read (there is a Wall Street Journal article about it), schools can “buy” students’ data from College Board and data may include a range of PSAT scores, not exact scores. I also believe students can check a box when testing allowing colleges to find them/match to them. I do know my son did allow for that. The twin who received the portfolio had not yet taken the SAT, nor had his brother, which is why I think it was PSAT scores since twins’ GPA and rigor and were almost identical, and both attended same school and lived in same zip code (obviously).
i was deferred but i got it back in november too
My DS also received portfolio and was deferred EA. He did very well on his PSAT. Since we are in NJ he was Commended.
Son was admitted EA, did not receive portfolio. PSAT (NJ) was Commended and also received two Recognition awards. Difficult to see a pattern.
