Sorry, your PM box is full and you seem to be very knowledgeable about dartmouth and several transfer policies.

Well, I am very depressed right now because I didn't get into Dartmouth or any of the "super reaches" for that matter. I realize that they were reaches and it was very unlikely, but it still doesn't change how much I want to go. Dartmouth is still my number one and I was wondering, what can I do to maximize my chances as a transfer? It'll be very likely that I will be attending UCLA this year and it is definitely not a dartmouth-esque environment. Would I be able to appeal their decision or ask why I got rejected?

Thanks so much, I just need some help right now because I have been moping in my room for the past 15 hours.

bump...............

Hey there,

Honestly I haven't heard of appeals working. Transferring, however, is totally an option and Dartmouth is an amazing place to transfer into. Don't worry, I didn't get into my favorite schools out of high school but got in everywhere I applied as a transfer. First of all, get a top GPA at UCLA. It will do wonders for your application. Second, retake the SAt depending on how well you did. third, continue your ECs (or similar ones) at the college level so it doesn't look like you just did them to get into college.

Thanks for the response :) You are always so helpful. Anywho, it turns out I got accepted to USC, which I am 90% sure I am picking over UCLA. Will getting a good GPA at USC compare to getting a good GPA at UCLA? Also, does it matter what I major in? I want to double major in business and german and minor in philosophy, but if I want to transfer to dartmouth, should I drop the business since dartmouth doesn't have undergraduate business?

Also, thanks for clarifying the SAT's, I am glad I can retake them. By the end if this year, I can take Bio, Physics, and try and improve Math II one more time.

Does the adcom keep old applications? Would I need to start a new application from scratch?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions, it is greatly appreciated :). I am trying to recover from a slew of rejections.

Hey no problem.

If you did well enough on your SAT (1400 MV +), don't sweat the retakes. However if you think you were weak it might help alot. Seriously though, pump out a 3.75+ first semester at either place and you'll be in very good shape.

Truthfully I don't think UCLA or USC will make any difference. They are both basically on par, in fact I might give a slight edge to UCLA. As for business, since its your first year you are going to have plenty of core classes to take. I'd take the business pre-recs (econ, calc, stats, etc), all of which will be relevant to both your major and if you happen to get into Dartmouth.

The adcom keeps the old applications, but you have to make a new one. Its really not that much work though, I used alot of the same essays.

Hope this helps! Also, make sure to apply to Brown and Northwestern, aas well as they are much friendlier than Dartmouth when it comes to accepting transfers.

jimmy:

There is no doubt that your gpa can be higher at 'SC than at UCLA, which has a C+ curve for many frosh classes. Good luck.

I too would like some information about applying transfer to Dartmouth. I've taken the SAT twice, and although I was personally satisfied with my writing and CR scores, my math score never reached the 700 level. Do you know if Dartmouth will take the composite scores of SAT tests taken, or do they look at just one sitting?

Also, I'm going to Tulane University, where I think I can take sophomore status through AP Credit. Should I take sophomore status, so I can apply transfer this fall?

I just applied to transfer at Dartmouth, and is waiting for decision. A word of advice, start app early, I go to a large school in Canada, it was very difficult for me to get recs together, even though i used every opportunity available to get to know my teachers and let them know about me, it wasn't too pretty. In the end, i would say that i got a generic rec.
but not just that, it took a while to get those pieces together. For me, making that app was like an extra course, although i enjoyed some of that rediscovering process (finding out that i write much better than i did when i applied as a freshman) it was a lot of work.
best of luck :D

Samian Quazi, dartmouth takes SAT scores by composite.

Another thing, how much do college recommendations count? If they are weighted heavily, should I go to a liberal arts college instead so I can get one on one with the professor?

Slipper, I plan on writing new essays anyway, but if I end up using the same essays, they won't care?

Thanks, Jimmy. I'd taken the SAT twice, and my composite score equaled 2200 (680M, 730V/CR, 790 W), and I had been wondering whether or not I should take it again for the last time, in college.

Also, do you think that it's a good or bad thing that I'd be applying transfer from Tulane?

And Slipper, what questions did your Dartmouth transfer essays talk about? Like, did you list reasons you wanted to transfer there?

bump.. just need some of those last answers :)

You can use the same essays, just make sure to improve them. I used high school essays for my transfer schools and was accepted to each of them. They were significantly improved, however. Also, there is a section for "why Dartmouth." I wrote a long essay on this topic, addressing 1) why I had done everything to make my current college experience work 2) why it didn't 3) why Dartmouth was everything i was looking for in a college experience.

ok, so I am back... and I am still depressed (sounds a lot like my first post on this thread, lol) every time i lurk around on this board, but I have a couple more transfer questions if you don't mind slipper

I will be attending UCLA next year and I will probably be doubling in business economics and philsophy (econ and philosophy wherever i end up transferring) so...

should i apply as a sophmore transfer or a junior transfer?

what kind of classes do they like to see? (i thought it didnt matter as long as you have a high GPA, but my sister keeps telling me otherwise)

this is kind of a continuation of the previous question and your answer in the previous post regarding taking pre-reqs, but if i decide to apply as a soph transfer, should I just stick to doing my GE's? A lot of the pre-req classes are weeder classes with horrible professors.

Sorry for all the questions. i just don't want to give up on a dream since UCLA is just the complete opposite of what i wanted out of my college experience.

Hi,

I'd really would try to get in as a sophomore if possible, but of course if it doesn't work out you can try junior year. Entering sophomore year has numerous benefits: there are many more sophomore transfers, you get to have sophomore summer, you get study abroad opportunities, more flexibility, etc. That isn't to say that if it doesn't work out next time you can't always try again.

I would take classes where dartmouth has a comparable class just for credit reasons. Basically don't take too many business classes and focus more on econ or GEs.

thanks for the respose slipper.. um, I tried looking up some of the courses, but I can't tell if they'll transfer or not (mostly GE's), but does this tentative schedule look alright (ill be applying to dmouth+other schools around march, so im going to give the first 2 quarters/trimesters)?

German 1
German 50B - great works of german lit in translation
Philosophy 21 - skepticism and rationality
Econ 1 - Macroeconomics

German 2
Linguistics 20 - intro to linguistics/ Hist 2D - Religion, the Occult, and Science: Science, Magic, and Religion, 1600 to the Present (cant decide which one)
Philosophy 22 - intro to ethical theory
Econ 2 - Microeconomics

Do you have any other suggestions? The econs and German classes will prob transfer, but I don't know about the other classes. Will they think this schedule's too easy?

They'll all transfer - I think the schedule looks great.

you are awesome, thanks so much!

So.. 19 quarter units is a lot harder than I thought. So.. if I end up taking 14 this quarter, will this ruin my chances as a transfer? If I drop the class, my final schedule will be:

German 1 (4)
Philosophy 31 - Logic (4)
English Composition 3 (5)
Seminar - Existentialism (1)

Yeah.. this is a bit different than the planned schedule.

That looks fine, just make sure to get near a 4.0.
