So, I got accepted into UCSD Muir in Human Biology major as a transfer. I was wondering if I should switch to Revelle because I would knock out all of my Revelle requirements with my major requirements(physics, calculus, chemistry, biology sequences). There is also a language requirement in Revelle, but I could easily complete that in one quarter with the vietnamese heritage class (LIHL 114). In Muir, I would have to take an extra writing course(MCWP 50 or 125). Is it worth it to switch colleges or should I just stay in Muir?

If you go on the website, Revelle has a lot more pre-reqs you would have to take. My highschool friend decided on Muir because she realized she wouldn’t have to take “extra” classes for no reason. She majored in Biochem Bio.

There are a lot of threads about this, but I love your username!!! And pic

I’ve written about this a few times on these threads (you guys should use the search function :P), but there’s a lot of misconception regarding the six college GE’s for transfer students. Really, it’s going to depend on what your major is, but the general assumption that “Revelle = hard and Muir = easy” that I see way too often isn’t necessarily true. This tends to be the case for freshmen (non-science majors) not those that are science transfers.

I’m a molecular biology major in Revelle, and Revelle doesn’t have a lot of “extra” GE’s for biology majors because they overlap with your lower division major requirements (Physics, Bio, Chem, Calculus) that you’ll have completed/will complete any way. Really, the only extra thing you’re required to take is a foreign language and if you’ve taken CC / AP language courses or, even better, if you’re already fluent in another language it’s actually somewhat convenient to choose Revelle. That’s because you can test out of the language requirement if you’re fluent or will only have 1-2 language GE’s if you’ve taken previous transferable language courses. Really for your situation, you’re going to have to take 2-3 extra GE’s for any of the colleges, so it just comes down to a matter of preference of what you want those to be. Do you want those required 2-3 courses to be humanities (ERC), writing (Muir), foreign language (Revelle), etc.

For more info about the colleges see some of my previous posts in similar threads where I expand more on the requirements and the general differences between the colleges:
