So, I just got accepted into UCSD Muir in Human Biology major as a transfer. I was wondering if I should switch to Revelle because I would knock out all of my Revelle requirements with my major requirements(physics, calculus, chemistry, biology sequences). There is also a language requirement in Revelle, but I could easily complete that in one quarter with the vietnamese heritage class (LIHL 114). In Muir, I would have to take an extra writing course(MCWP 50 or 125). Is it worth it to switch colleges or should I just stay in Muir?

If Revelle would knock out your major requirements, then I would go for it.

But are you able to change your college preference after you have been accepted?

If I remember correctly, they usually only let you switch colleges if you can demonstrate that you can graduate earlier if you switch colleges. It sounds like your options are either take a language class for Revelle or take a writing class for Muir. I don’t think they’d let you switch since it would take the same amount of time either way.

If you want to switch colleges just to avoid taking a writing class, then I would recommend you take the writing class. Either it’s a breeze because you’re a pro at writing papers, or it’s challenging because you’re not very good at writing papers. And if you’re not very good at writing, then you should probably take a class in it to improve your writing skills.

@SmoothAl The transfer FAQ said that newly admitted transfer students could request a change of college, but after reading it closely, the change may only happen under a good reason.

@baxtrax Thank you for the explanation! I originally wanted to switch because I wanted to take a language course in improving my vietnamese while fulfilling my college requirements, but that’s not a good reason after all. I’ll stay in Muir since it’s not a bad idea to improve my writing :)

You can always take the language course just out of interest. Plan out your schedule and see if it works. One extra class here or there shouldn’t make or break you. You’re paying by the quarter, not the unit, so adding on an extra class won’t cost you anything either.

But I’m biased since I was both a Muir graduate and think that everyone should be forced to improve their writing =D

Muir is possibly one of the most requested colleges because of the fact that it has the least requirements to fulfill. The writing class isn’t that bad as long as you have a good topic and a good TA. As for the language that you want to take, I would also suggest seeing if it fits in your schedule just as a free class that you are interested in.
