Question on UMichigan Preferred Admission for Ross Business

i submitted my application&portfolio for ross business. if i get rejected from preferred admission, does that mean i’m automatically rejected from lsa? or is it possible that i am accepted to lsa, but just not allowed to study at ross?

You can get accepted at LSA and rejected for preferred admission to Ross. If that happens you can go to LSA for a year and reapply.

They are in the process of transitioning Ross to a freshman admit program so the admissions process is in a state of flux, but that’s what I heard at a recent admissions presentation.

As of now, you still need to be admitted by LSA (or other school) before they consider your preadmission.

“You can get accepted at LSA and rejected for preferred admission to Ross. If that happens you can go to LSA for a year and reapply.”

I thought the new procedure was that once you submitted and were rejected by Ross, you could not apply again for the BBA degree.

That is what I heard too. On the other hand, now there are very little seats left for sophomore transfer. So the chance is very low anyway.

  1. You have to be admitted to LSA (or Engineering or another school within UMich) BEFORE Ross will even look at your application. So, yes, you are already accepted to Michigan. If you don't get into Ross you can still attend Michigan.
  2. No, you cannot apply to Ross again if you are denied as a HS senior. To apply during your freshman year of college, you have to be a first-tie applicant to Ross. Those are the new rules.

“No, you cannot apply to Ross again if you are denied as a HS senior. To apply during your freshman year of college, you have to be a first-tie applicant to Ross.”

I think it is a smart and fair stategy for Ross to have this new rule. I feel badly for those students who hoped that they would be admitted to Ross as sophomores and were not invited. These same students will now know that Ross is not an option and it will give them a chance to attend another school for business if that is what they really want.

I think this was one of the main drivers of the change in process. They were losing too many people who had a business-or-bust ambition and who were not pre-admitted to Ross under the old system. Even though they were admitted to Michigan LSA, they were choosing Indiana or other colleges that guaranteed them admission to the business school.

@brantly and others, I would check on not reapplying if you are denied as a senior. I attended an information session within the past week and I am 99% sure they said that it is still possible to apply as a freshman if you were denied as a HS senior, though that is not the preferred way of doing things and competition for the few spots will be fierce.

Yes, to attract quality applicants seems to be the main reason for the change to mostly preadmission. The preadmission will become direct admission soon. Even now, the preadmitted students are treated somewhat different from other LSA (or whatever school) freshmen as they are not eligible to the merit scholarships of corresponding schools.
Whether preadmission rejected student can apply again as sophomore transfer is not crystal clear to me. I heard about it but I have not seen it on paper. It would make sense if they want to limit the number of applicants as there are not many seats left.

From Michigan’s Academic Questions section of Common App:

“Stephen M. Ross School of Business applicants who are NOT offered admission through this process who have received an offer of admission to the College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) will retain their offer to enroll in LSA. However, engagement with the Stephen M. Ross School of Business in the future will be limited to programs other than the BBA.”

So it seems it is pretty clear for the restriction. It is interesting that it only mention LSA.

I don’t know whether the policy only pertains to those who apply to LSA as their “home” school", or whether my son got this particular message because he applied to LSA. Maybe those who put down Kineseology on the Common App got a similar message but worded specifically for that school?

If you apply as a senior to preferred business, you MUST be admitted to another school first, and REGARDLESS OF THE SCHOOL( LSA, engineering, kinesiology etc) , if you are denied in high school, you CANNOT apply as a freshman again. The remaining limited spots will be for kids who never applied as high school seniors or are incoming transfer students to the university.
