I have a few questions and concerns regarding Boston University SMG, Baruch College, and Penn State Harrisburg. Any advice would be of great help, thx
1) I need help deciding where to attend, I want to major in economics. BU gave me no financial aid and i have a EFC of 2k. I would have to pay 49k a year. Is it worth going to BU? I heard their economics program is pretty good. If i do extremely well Freshman year, will their increase the financial aid significantly? Also, can i get a good enough job with a degree from BU to pay off the debt if i choose to attend BU? how hard is it to transfer to another school ( is the deflated grade policy true?)

2) I live in NYC, Baruch would be free but the college isn't too appealing for me. Baruch is a commuter school and i want to have a real college experience with a campus and dorm kind of thing. Can I transfer out of Baruch to a good school sophomore year if I do extremely well. can any1 tell me about their economics program?

3) Penn State Harrisburg's tuition is 19k, another 10k for board+ room. I don't know a lot about this school, but I'm considering it because of its 2+2 program, where you get to transfer to University Park after 2 years. Does anyone know anything about the school, are its academics any good, is it a commuter school? Could I transfer sophomore year to University Park or any other schools?

I want to transfer to a better school regardless of where I go (unless i go to BU), which of these schools would be most advantageous to my situation.

I think you’ll find some post on here where people will tell you it doesn’t matter what school you go to. I’ve seen many people get accepted into top schools who went to community college. It’ll all depends on your College grades, and the upward transgression of them.

I think you should pick a place where you know you will excel with the challenging course load. If you really want to go to BU, then do it. If you go to another school with the mindset that you’re going to transfer, etc, then you’re going to miss out.

I got into Baruch last year. I seriously regret not going there over my current institution. Since you wanna transfer, who cares if Baruch does/doesn’t have a campus cause you’ll only be there for a short while. Take Baruch, do well and apply. You’ll save yourself a ton of $, which will be a big benefit when trying to transfer cause funds are pretty limited for transfers.

Well I agree with kk23. I went to Brooklyn College because I got into it with full tuition covered (and have actually taken two classes at Baruch, so I know the atmosphere) and the number one reason that I’m transferring is because of the really bad community atmosphere. Basically, there is none. If you went to a school like Baruch and got all of their requirements out of the way it would be very easy for you to get at leas ta 3.5 which, in other colleges, might be difficult, and would give you the competitive edge for the better schools that you apply for for transfer. Maybe even BU if that’s where you really want to be.

And that’s another thing that I agree on (wow I’m being really agreeable lately…) my boyfriend goes to BU and the campus is gigantic. There is not much of a campus life and if you are not friends with people in your building it will be difficult to make friends all over the campus because they’re so far away and the grade deflation causes the vast majority of students to stay inside studying the majority of the time. I can see that it’s definitely better than Baruch as a community, but I don’t know how much better…

BTW financial does not work that way. It doesn’t matter what your grades look like. If you come from a low income family then you will get more money. If you’re parents make too much money then you get less.

Also it is very easy to transfer to another school as long as you have the grades.

but i do come from a low income family (50k) and i have a twin brother who’s enrolling in college too and they have given me no financial aid ( except govt aid). do ypu guys think BU is worth that much debt. and has anyone transferred to a good school coming out of baruch.

They gov don’t care. You have to be dirt poor (parents making 20k) to get a decent package. Pretty much barely surving.

Even though I don’t come from a low income family, its me and my 2 other brothers in college and my fin-aid package at the university I was suppose to attend was so damn horrible.

As far as transferring out of Baruch to a good school, you can transfer to what ever school you want too. You just have to have a good grades.

You need to be looking for schools, when you transfer, that offer 100% of financial need met. My parents have a similar income and schools like Smith gave me 90% of the entire cost including tuition, room and board etc. It all depends on the school.

So maybe you shouldn’t transfer to BU maybe you should look into other options when you transfer
