Hello there,
My DS20 is taking Latin IV honor at his school and will be taking IB Latin in his Junior/senior year. When do you think is a good time for him to take the Latin subject test and the AP Latin? He loves Latin and does really well in class, also did really well in the national Latin exams II and III.
Your guidance is greatly appreciated.
First of all, the Latin SAT Subject Test is only offered twice a year, as I recall, in December and June, so plan accordingly. Second, if I recall correctly, the AP (which is offered only in the spring) covers Caesar’s Gallic War and Vergil’s Aeneid, which is different from the material covered in the subject test. He should look at the test descriptions carefully and decide when would be best, depending on what he’s been covering at school and if he needs to do any work to supplement it.
On the positive side, these days only about 120 people in the world get an 800 on the Latin SAT Subject Test in a given year (see here: https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/sat/pdf/sat-subject-tests-percentile-ranks.pdf), so he can really distinguish himself!
Thank u @DeepBlue86
thank goodness he is not taking Chinese
@makemesmart Definitely check the test descriptions. My understanding is that the subject test is best after Latin III. If he takes the subject test, I would be sure to use a prep book to refresh his memory on earlier topics.
Thank u @evergreen5, any prep book recommendations?
What’s the sat latin subject prepare book(s) you end up using? I need them for my kid. Thanks
@llgoldenfish
No one recommended any books yet. lol. Will let you know if I find out anything more.
