Does anybody know if you have private voice lessons while doing the musical theatre minor? I’m really concerned about not diong any musical theatre for the first two years, which I’ve heard is the case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

& if anybody else has questions, post them here & maybe others can help!

At Marymount you take a music theory class your first year as well as dance class five days a week. In your second year you will be assigned a voice teacher. The reason for this is (i asked over the weekend when i visited) they want your singing training to be acting based. They believe it is just as important to be able to act a song as it is to sing it. I was concerned just like you but when i questioned he told me that you will definatly be singing in the theory class you just wont be assigned a private voice teacher. But you will definatly be doing dancing and singing your first year just no private lessons till Sophmore year. Hope that helps!

that's cool to know! do you know if those classes are things you have to sign up for & hope you get or if every musical theatre minor gets in those classes?

& do you know if this applies to anybody in the musical theatre minor or jsut people who are BFA dance majors? because I'm doing a BA in theatre arts with the MT minor. just curious!

Thats me as well, I am going for BA theatre arts with the musical theatre minor. With the musical theatre minor you are automatically put into those classes...that is to say that in May you will be sent a packet of info and then you send it in with a specific time for them to call you..they will call you for like a half hour and you will register for you schedule then. But as far as i know the dance and theory class are standard for the musical theatre minor

awesome! thanks!

PS heyyy we're going to the same school! sweet! lets party! hahaha just kidding.

except you werent and we will ;)

Just to clarify, everyone (including freshmen) gets voice lessons once a week and dance 5 days a week (2 days of ballet, 2 days of jazz, 1 day of tap). Freshmen also take "Fundamentals of Musical Theatre" which is split into two parts. One being musicianship (music theory, sight-singing, etc.), the other being history of musical theatre.

are freshman musical theatre minors gauranteed to be able to take those or is there a chance we wont be put in the classes if we can't make it to the registration day? that's my biggest concern

I didn't even realize there was a registration day. When I was a freshman we scheduled a time for someone from the theater department to call us at home in late May or early June and they helped us register for classes. Since it's a required class, there should be plenty of room for all freshmen to take it.

yes there is a phone advisement..you should have recieved a packet about it....like for instance mine is june 1st

Is it possible to be a dance major at MMC and do the MT minor?

I gather from a post by MaryAnna on the other thread that it is not, but thought I would ask....I have a friend whose daughter is interested in possibly pursuing admission to this school and is an amazing DANCER but who also loves musical theater...

My daughter's dance teacher's daughter went to MMC a couple of years ago as a dance major and thought she was also doing the MT minor (supposedly was told she could do that) but when she actually went to register for classes and got to school, she was told you really COULDN'T do the MT minor with Dance major, so ended up transfereing out of MMC. So I would suggest that unless something has changed in the last couple of years, NOT to plan on having an MT minor if you are a dance major.

Just as an FYI -- you have to audition to get admitted into the MT minor at MMC. It is very evident that you have to be in the BA or BFA tract to get into the MT minor. I don't know how someone would have went there "thinking" they were in the MT minor. When you register for classes it is with an advisor in a one-on-one phone call. They help you register and automatically put you in MT classes if you have been accepted to the program.

Does anyone know about the curriculum for BFA Acting? I know you can minor in MT with the BFA acting, but if you chose not to minor in MT, exactly what classes to the acting majors have? Any voice? Any Dance?

If you major in BA acting,BFA acting, etc. do you get any academic based classes? Any math, etc?

Hey y'all--

I was wondering if anyone knows how hard it is to get into Marymount's BA dance program, as opposed to the BFA. The audition process is the same for both, but their website makes it clear that BFA is the performance program of the two. So are the standards lower for the BA? I want to double major and concentrate in theatre dance for the BA program, and I'm a trained dancer, but not in the classical-ballerina sense that the BFA seems to require.

So basically, is it easier to get into the BA program? haha. That's sort of what the information on the website leads me to believe, but I could be completely wrong.

I mainly want to have this major so I can do the MT minor as well, but unfortunately I can't audition for both at separate times-- I live in New Orleans and flying to New York for the dance audition alone is going to be expensive. So I guess that's out of the question, at least for my first year.

Any help you guys could give would be amazing <3

Laura

PS I'm a senior and MMC is currently at the top of my list, so any other info on the school would be appreciated.
