Questions about Rice/Baylor Program

Sorry I know there's like at least 3 threads dedicated to this topic but I have a different question. What kind of students do the Rice/Baylor porgam look for? Do they all have to have above 1550s on SATs and a 4.0 gpa and a hundred research papers and thousands of hours of hospital research? Becaus eI don't have all that but I'm trying anyways. I believe I'm a strong applicant but by no means the best. That's why I want to know if anyone knows what kinds of students they accept or like to hear from.

Thanks

Well, I'm not on the admissions committee or anything, so who can say for sure?
Judging by the people I know in the program, and those that I met at the interviews, and some other info, I think they are not THAT concerned with grades and GPA... for example, Rice says that the Rice/Baylors have the same average GPA as the rest of the rice student body. Also, I wasn't in the top 5% of my class, and I'm Rice/Baylor, even though 76% of Rice students were in the top 5%. I think they are looking for some real knowledge of what it might be like to be a doctor (volunteering, shadowing, etc.) and/or some knowledge of research. More importantly, they are looking for people who are bright and articulate and friendly and involved in their communities.
I think that they are not too focused on quantitative stuff, like number of hours of volunteering, but more on what you have gained from what you have done. They want to know if you will take advantage of everything that Rice and BCM have to offer. They want to make sure that you want to be a doctor for the right reasons.

We have chatted via the message board about my daughter recently...not sure if you remember me! Lauren will be visiting Rice this Friday...we'll take the tour and do the residential college lunch thing. She also wants to visit a class, preferably a lab. Before I contact Rice to make arrangements for this, I'd love to know if you have a recommendation or know of a professor who enjoys having h.s. kids observing. Because she spent a lot of time at Rice last year researching for the NHD competition, she is pretty familiar with the campus. But we are looking to dig a little deeper and get a feel for what it would be like to be a member of the Rice family. We'd also like to get more info about the Rice/Baylor program.

She visited Baylor recently...they have a phenomenal new Science building and everything (except freshman housing) is just about perfect. But I think she may have a problem leaving the big city for a town that is wholly about the university. And being Lauren and by nature mischievious, she put the pre-med admissions counselor on the spot and asked him to draw a comparison between Rice and Baylor. lol! It was a very revealing conversation! I hope we can get as an accurate picture of Rice on Friday.

Any help would so appreciated!

10 am chem 122 might be a good choice - Dr. Hutchinson is a VERY well respected prof, and i can't imagine he'd mind one bit - and I'm in there. It might be hard to arrange a lab visit, but you can definitely ask. Both Chem 124 (the lab that goes with chem 122) and Bios 211 (intro to experimental biosciences) have labs on friday afternoons. I'm in the bio, but have chem lab on wednesdays.

PM me if you'd like to meet for a bit - not sure when you're leaving, but i have a free block from 11-12 if that might work for you...otherwise, it'll porbably have to be after 5...pesky bios lab!

After I wrote this reply, i had a few more ideas.
There is also a 1pm session of chem 122 - that prof is very nice, but she is new this year, and very inexperienced, which shows in her teaching. I had her last semester, and that would be fine to visit, but that class is not really as good as the 10 am. There may also be a section of physics or physics lab on fridays - she'd most likely take physics 126, so that's the one to look for.

If you are interested in Rice/Baylor, you might want to do one or both of these things -arange a visit with Dr. Winer in the pre-med advising office (sweetest lady, she cares so much about the students) or walk around the Texas Medical Center for a while to see how huge it is and how much stuff is going on.

Also, if there are any clubs that your daughter is specificaly interested in, have her attend a meeting or meet with someone who does it. (I can give you more details on how to go about this, if you need).

The best way to find out what it's like to go here is to stay overnight. The perspective is VERY different. If you think you might be able to stay, admissions will probably say it's too short notice to arrange something, but just PM me and your daughter is more than welcome to my floor!

PS. If you do end up coming to a lab, wear closed toed shoes, or they might not let you in.

We are scheduling a tour at 11:00 a.m. and info session at 2:00 p.m. with a residential hall lunch in between, so the 10:00 chem class sounds like it might be a perfect fit....plus we'll get a chance to meet you...added bonus! I'll give the admissions office a call and see if this can't be scheduled. And I will talk to Lauren this afternoon and see if she would like to do an overnight...this was so kind of you to offer.

ok, let me know today or tomorrow, because I'll have to clean my room if she wants to stay over.

Hey, i was just rereading your post - and i think there might be a bit of confusion.

Rice/Baylor is a joint program between Rice and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston. BCM is NOT affiliated with Baylor University in Waco. Two completely sperate schools (although I believe that at one point they were affiliated).

PS. I cleaned my room, a little.

Hi Jenskate - No we get it...Baylor University offers a program similar to the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program. Theirs is called Baylor to Baylor or Baylor^2 and is an 8 year program comprised of 4 years undergraduate work at Baylor and 4 years med school at BCM. The main difference is that they only take 4 students into their program...I think so few not because they are as selective as Rice but mainly because if accepted, students get both undergraduate and med school tuition covered plus a good portion of living expenses. We just visited Baylor as an option for undergraduate work for L. I think Baylor University and BCM ended their affiliation quite a few years ago though Baylor does have a pretty high accept rate into BCM (outside the Baylor^2 program).

Btw...L just found out she has to cheer a district game Thursday and Friday nights, so no stayover possible. Most of the other senior cheerleaders are A & M bound and there is some big Aggie weekend deal going on, so she wasn't excused (juniors get outranked on everything). She was really disappointed, but appreciates your offer! Said it would have been so cool to get to stay over. We are going to take your advice and walk around the Medical Center though. We used to practically live down there...both L and my s have been treated at Scurlock (Drs Brock and Gugenheim) and my s had surgery at TCH when he was 6 months old. And my s also was diagnosed/treated at the Meyer Center. But (knock wood) all is well now and it's been years since we've had to make those weekly visits...Brock and Gugenheim are at Texas Orthopedic now and I'm sure much else has changed.

Thanks again for all your help. I think it is awesome you take the time to help others!!

Ok, about the baylor issue - just wanted to be sure, as it's a very common error.
maybe i'll see you friday in chem...if I see someone i don't know and her mother, i'll be sure to introduce myself.
i hope she has fun cheerleading! If there's another day she wants to stay over, let me know.

Hi Jenskate! I'm a high school senior from CT and I was accepted to Rice through interim. I'm in the process of writing my application right now, actually, so I was wondering if you had any more tips/pointers for the admission process, and especially the essays (what did you write about?)! If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats when you applied to the program? I did some internet digging and some people who are in Rice/Baylor are just absolutely AMAZING, and I just want to know if I even have a chance! Thanks! =D

I haved posted my stats on other threads - see if you can find them.
I think the essays have to be completely yours. If you wrote about what I wrote about it wouldn't work at all. If you get an interview, wear a suit. I'm not joking - that is my one and only tip.
Everyone has a chance! Apply, and see how it goes. Good luck!
