Could someone who has taken this course before give me an overview of their experiences with the class (usefulness of the material, grading, workload, professor, etc.) and whether or not you recommend it? I was originally going to take ECON103 next semester but found that CC users generally recommended the class, so I am considering the STAT430/431 track instead. However, I'd like more information and I do not personally know any students who have taken the course.

Also, this fall, I see that there is a 'regular' section taught by Cai and an honors by Brown. Can anyone comment on either professor?

It’s a hard class, and you can’t register for another week because PennInTouch is closed until the beginning of August. I would recommend waiting to take it in the spring with Low. I’ve heard mixed things about every other professor, my experience was that Professor Low lived up to his glowing reviews. It’s a requirement for me, but it was a thorough introduction to collegiate level Probability. If you must take a STAT class this semester, 431 is an option, but I’ve heard mixed things about the class as a whole.

While I have not taken Stat 430, I know quite a few people who have. From my observation, the reason people have such a strong reaction to Stat 430 is because it is much more theoretical than most math/stat classes they have taken, especially for Econ majors. Compared to the classes math and physics majors take, it is not that theoretical at all. For people who are more into the theoretical side of math and science, I hear that Stat 430 is quite straight forward. However, if you are only used to calculating things it can be quite difficult and I know a few people who had a very hard time in the course.
