Questions about transferring (current students please look :))

Hi, i am currently a freshman at Umass Amherst, and am considering transferring to UF for financial reasons and i just had a few questions. 1) how hard is it to get in as a bio major transfer, like GPA etc.
2) i will most likely have to wait another year for the instate tuition as i miss 12 months by just under 2 weeks for sophomore year, and was wondering how hard will it be the make friends etc
3) how big is greek life, does it dominate the party and social aspects of the school, and would it be too late to join as a junior (I’m assuming yes but figured id ask)
4) How is the party scene? is it house parties, will it be hard to find parties as a new junior? are the bars good and all that stuff?
5) Whats the usually off campus living like? 4 bedroom? what price per month?
6) is it hard to get a job ob campus, as i need to cover a decent amount of my tuition and Umass loans are just too much and would rather work for the money.
7) how is the school spirit? Umass students love it and i love that about the school, do u find its the same there? do most people really enjoy going to UF?
Thanks so much in advance, and sorry if any of the questions sounds stupid!

Others should feel free to jump in, but…

Always, Always, call UF and confirm any info you’re given on CC. We are often wrong!

  1. UF only accepts junior transfers. You have to meet your colleges course and GPA requirements (about 60 credits or an AA). As a Bio Major, you would apply to CLAS (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences):

UF has two Bio majors, one is a BA, the other is a BS.

  1. Make sure you read the rules on in-state residency.

You may want to skip a semester of school, and work, before enrolling in a Florida school. If $ is an issue, you may also want to think about transferring to a Florida CC, to finish your transfer requirements. It will save you a substantial amount of money, while increasing your chances at admissions to UF. It’s an option.

On making friends…UF is very transfer student friendly. About 1/4 to 1/3 of all new students on campus, each year, are transfer students. You will need to make an effort, by joining clubs, forming study groups, etc. UF has over 1,000 clubs/student organizations, so go make the most of it.

  1. As a transfer student (living off campus) Greek life will be a non-factor. About 20% of men are in a fraternity, about 24% of women are in a sorority. You'll find plenty of social activity, outside of Greek life.
  2. How's the party scene? A current student could better answer this question, but UF is ranked as one of the BEST quality of life colleges.
  3. Lots of options around off-campus living. Most students live off-campus. Prices go from as low as $350 a month (with roommates) to $700+ a month. The more roommates, the lower the cost.

My daughter’s apartment has 4 bedrooms for $499 a month (includes a utilities allowance), and 2 bedrooms for $599 a month. Now, the apartment I lived at is much cheaper, but my daughter would never dream of living there.

  1. It can be hard to find a paying job on campus, but it's easier if you look for an opening during the summer, when they are short handed. Jobs are also available off campus.
  2. School Spirit? It's the Gator Nation., it's at a completely different level than UMass.
