1) This may seem like a naive question, but I had no idea where online to go to find this sort of information out... is there a bus (or at least some form of commuter transportation) that links Austin and its suburbs (namely Georgetown)? If you're wondering why, it's because I have relatives in Georgetown and I have a big phobia of driving (which I know I'll have to get over to an extent)... I know that because of its distance, it obviously wouldn't be practical to try commuting there daily, but I was just curious if it was possible at all.

2) I'm going to UT Austin next fall... a teacher of mine that graduated from there tells me that it's hardly ever absolutely necessary to get in the car and drive somewhere, and that the public transportation is good and runs all over the city as well as around the campus... is this generally true or is it an oversimplification? Every time I've been to Austin, the traffic has been an absolute nightmare, I suppose because of imperfect planning and location on the interstate (but the same is more or less true for other Texan cities I've been in, such as San Antonio).

I know of no bus going back and forth to Georgetown other than Greyhound, which I don't think is what you were after.

The bus system is fine. You shouldn't need a car. The bus system is free with your student ID (not just the UT shuttles but all of them) and runs pretty much everywhere you will need to go. Parking is a major hassle as well if you do have a car. You can see more on the bus system at their web address. Capital Metro Transit - Austin, Texas

UT has the most extensive transportation system of any university in the country. There are tons of busses..even busses to take you to the bars and back on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday Night.

I'm not sure about buses to Georgetown though. It wouldn't surprise me if there were (heck, there are busses that take students from Austin to San Marcos and back (Texas State), but I would seriously recommend living near campus for a better "quality of life."

Just found that page... that's really interesting. Obviously it doesn't exist now and probably won't for several years, but it's amazing that they're considering doing that (or, okay, maybe it's not "amazing," I just find it cool). It also confirms my original conviction that a transit system between the two areas doesn't exist yet... I also looked around the Capital Metro site and it seems to be a pretty convenient system ...
