Questions Re McMahon Hall

My son's entering Fordham Lincoln Center this fall.

Please indulge me:
- the bedsheets, comforters and blankets should be longer than regular?
- laundry is free, on what floor is the laundry room located? the student provides his own detergents and stuff, right?
- no hot plate, but what cookware is allowed? a coffee-maker? pots and pans? how much dinnerware, just for one?
- if he brings a TV set, is the dorm cable ready?
- will he need a personal printer?
- dorm is WiFi?

Re security:
- can the dorm closets be locked?
- how safe are laptops and printers from theft?

Is partying allowed inside the dorm?

I ask not in judgment of the place, am just a paranoid mother.
Thanks.

Hey! I’m also an incoming freshman, but I can answer a few of these:

Please indulge me:

 • the bedsheets, comforters and blankets should be longer than regular?
 • They should be Twin XL. Stores that cater to dorm shopping usually have them (Target, Wall Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc). And I think it’s only the fitted sheets that need to be that long; everything else can be regular, but I could be wrong about that.

laundry is free, on what floor is the laundry room located? the student provides his own detergents and stuff, right?
*No clue, but I never thought about bringing detergent.

no hot plate, but what cookware is allowed? a coffee-maker? pots and pans? how much dinnerware, just for one?
*Coffe makers are allowed, they just need an automatic turn-off. There’s a list of what to bring [here[/url]. And I will be bringing pots/dinnerware, but as far as how much, I’ll go over it with my roommate and figure that out later. I’m guessing we’ll each bring a small set of dishes, for personal use, and bring a few pots & pans to be shared, or something like that.

if he brings a TV set, is the dorm cable ready?
*Yes. But only 1 TV set is allowed per apartment, so he and his future roommate should discuss who will bring it, how it’ll be shared, etc.

will he need a personal printer?
*Everyone I’ve spoken to has said it’s in our best interests to bring a printer; however, I’m thinking my dorm will only need 1. Like if I bring a printer, she pays for ink or something.

dorm is WiFi?
*Yes. Re security:

can the dorm closets be locked?

how safe are laptops and printers from theft?
*If you lock your dorm door before you leave, you should be fine, I think. But you can get storage boxes w/locks to keep your valuables in, especially your laptop, and store them under beds.

Is partying allowed inside the dorm?
*I think most of the partying occurs outside of the dorms, but there may be a few gatherings here and there. I heard the RA’s can be sort of strict though.

You can tell how much I’ve been through the site, :). Like I said, I’m just a freshman too, so any current students correct me if I’m wrong anywhere.

Good morning! I’m currently starting my third year living in McMahon.

Regarding bedding, most colleges (inc. Fordham) have extra long beds, so definitely get XL Twin (there’s a Bed Bath and Beyond right by school, if need be).

Laundry’s on 2, 10, and 16. Unfortunately, you do your own laundry, and thus need your own detergent (Just make sure you don’t forget it in the laundry room!)

How much dinnerware will depend on arrangements between student and roomies. Some suites share dishes, other suites (like mine) everyone just uses their own. Plenty of cabinet space for pots and pans, etc.

Cable is provided, but can only be used by one tv set (don’t splice it), but you are allowed to have more than one tv, say if you wanted to use it to play video games or watch dvds in your room.

Security:
Dorm closets are actually just open, though you can lock your bedroom door. I’d say printers are pretty safe from theft, cause they’re awkward to steal. And that’s just kind of desperate. As for laptops, they’re pretty safe in the bedroom, though, as with any other place, I wouldn’t recommend just leaving it anywhere.

Partying:
Well, it depends. Loud music and drugs and underage drinking isn’t allowed. A gathering of people that follows the rules? Yeah, that’s permitted. So it just all depends on what’s going on.

Hope that helps!

I just finished my 1st year- it was at rose hill so it’ll probably be a tad different but shouldn’t be by much. Just a few points:

-Yes, bring your own detergent. Don’t leave it in the laundry room either…heh, learned that the hard way.
-TV’s are fine…I wasn’t aware of the 1 tv set per room but that could be true, I just know that they don’t allow cable splitters for whatever reason…
-Bring a printer, it’s extremely annoying to be borrowing/using other people’s.
-The closets we had couldn’t be locked. Don’t leave laptops just lying somewhere, even the lounge.
-RA’s are pretty strict about partying/etc in the rooms…that’s not to say it doesn’t happen though.
