Dorming @ Unit 1 (facilities & the room)

I'm an incoming freshie dorming at Unit 1 double this fall. After going thorugh the website ( <a href="http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/Move_in_2007/my_room_sun.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/Move_in_2007/my_room_sun.html</a> )that roughtly gave me an idea of what the dorm provides, I have a few questions for the experienced students:

1) Coincidentially i dormed at Unit 1 two years ago during a summer program held at Cal. I remember there were a few laundary supplies (including fabric softener & detergent) during my stay.At the In-unit laundry facilities, how often are laundary supplies available during school year?

2) It might be a misplaced memory... but I think there were also iron with ironing board around the laundary area?

3) I know the library provides printing services. Still, some students bring their own printer. Would you rather spend money on printing in the library or simply load up the trunk a bit more and bring a printer of your own?

4) The website indicates that the dorms include wastebaskets and bookshelves. Are they shared or there's one for each student? Would you recommend bringing one's own trashcan or mini-bookshelve (by mini bookshelve i mean those that would fit on a desk)?

I deeply thank you for your sharing of valuable experiences with an exited but confused Bear freshie :D

You bring your own detergent, but there are laundry rooms on 3 floors out of 8 (assuming you're not in a mini-suite) with two washers and two dryers.

That might be someone else's. The school does not provide them. People usually bring their own ironing boards. Actually, people usually don't bother.

You can actually go down to the student center that's right in the middle of the unit and get things printed there. Still, most students bring their own printers, so they don't have to walk down several flights of stairs (you get lazy). There's also the possibility that you'll be working until 4 a.m. and then you want to print something but all the facilities are closed.

There is exactly one bookshelf for two or three students, depending on if you're in a double or triple. It's usually enough space but if you want to bring a mini-bookshelf you can. I see bringing another trash can as unnecessary.

You're welcome, confused Bear freshie. :)

What do they charge for printing down at the student center?

I've never used it but it shouldn't be expensive. I'd guess around 10 cents a page.

Definitely bring your own printer. Either that or coordinate with a roommate. Your second best option is begging hallmates, but that becomes a pain in the ass through the year.

If i remember correctly, you get a limited amount of free printing in the dorms, then you have to pay or something, i dont remember, but it shouldnt be that expensive.

downstairs, it's 5 bucks for 250 pages. that comes out to 5 cents a page. definitely cheaper than bringing your own printer.

awsomee!!! Thanks for ALL the replies :)

I'm also staying in unit one. Unfortunately, I couldn't sneak into the dorms while I was there at CalSo because of security lol, so I'm not exactly sure what the exercise room in unit 1 has. Does it have a few ellipticals, or rather is it of pretty good size? Is it worth it to get the gym membership or does unit 1 offer enough ordinary exercise options? Thanks

exercise room has 2 treadmills, 2 bikes, and 4 ellipticals, if i remember correctly.

gym membership is highly recommended anyways because its only 10 bucks and you get access to hearst pool. the gym is pretty good, with huge weight rooms and like 100 ellipticals.

you don't have to sneak into the dorms to get into the exercise room silly!
it's in the central building, it's usually unlocked...usually

prohz-
Thanks for the reply. It's nice to have that so close to the units. But the gym isn't far away and I might be on campus when I need to exercise ... and $10 IS really cheap for gym membership.

surf-
lol. Give the freshman a break ; )! At Calso, I - in all my sneakiness - also tried to sneak into the central building to no avail. It's probably unlocked during the school year I'd imagine

I asked this in the general question section, but this thread may be more appropriate - what about printers in a triple? Do students share or each have their own? Is desk big enough (with a laptop).

thanks

I believe stuedents have to talk about that amongst their roomates. The units doesn't include printers, so either one of the students bring a printer for the room or each student bring their own printer. It would be also an alternative to not bring printer at all and use university provided printer at the students center.
hope it helped.

I forgot if this is unit 1 or not, but if you go to youtube and do a search for fantasy2001 that person (from Taiwan) did a video of the computing room area with a quick peak at the gym there.
