Do you need to buy a mattress pad for the bed? If we do, I can't find one that is Extra Long Twin. I say it isn't that big of a deal but my mom is freaking out because of bed bugs and louse. I tell her that they clean the beds and we have our own sheets.

Also I know that there are two ethernet ports on the room (one for each roommate presumably). I have an Xbox, a desktop, and a laptop so I am wondering if I could use a router to allow them all to be online at the same time? Otherwise I would need to use wireless for the laptop (how reliable is the wireless connection in the dorms?) and swap back and forth with my xbox.

Also on one of the lists on the UF housing site, it says that you need to buy a closets curtain. What exactly is that, just a normal curtain? And what size do we need, does it depend on the room?

And I am aware that there is a free bike repair station, how does it work? Do you have to supply the parts?

Thanks.

bed bugs a pretty big deal, and they pretty much move you out and torch the place if they’re reported. but i honestly wouldn’t believe them if they told me they cleaned the beds.

however, get the mattress pad. they make the bed so much more comfortable. you’d be crazy not to.

as for the ethernet, no you cannot under any circumstances whatsoever have your own router. i’ve never heard of someone using one successfully either (i’ve even tried with a weird one) by knowing how the stuff works. you will have to use wireless for the desktop. depending on where you live, the wireless should be plenty good. i think they’re jsut now finishing it up in the murphree area though, so i don’t know how that is. i think i got wireless for the first time in sledd like a week before exams last spring.

as for the closet curtain: thats something you’ll buy when you get there. it never even occurred to me that i’d want one. maybe if you invite some lady friend to your dorm and you want to hide your clothes they’re useful, but i don’t really see the point beyond that. while you’re at it, you might as well wait until you get there to get the mattress pad (if you cant find one where you live). it shouldn’t be hard to find around move-in time because everyones looking for something.

protip: all that random stuff you’re unsure about should be bought when you get there. move in, make a list of stuff you want for your room, and go with your parents to walkmart and buy what you need. then get groceries. then they can leave.

bike repair station: minor tune-up stuff they do. for replacement stuff like broken parts or flat tires, you will have to buy your own stuff. the outdoor equipment store at the union has tubes and stuff for common problems.

“you will have to use wireless for the desktop”

I don’t think my desktop has a built in wireless adapter. So I would assume that I need to purchase one, how much do they cost? Would it just be better to do the “swap” method?

i’m sorry stupid mistake on my part. meant laptop, not desktop. desktop is fine. if you only have 1 ethernet, you’ll have to switch between xbox and desktop.

We did preview last week. Our son is in Hume and there they actually have a walk-in closet area but no divider or curtain in front of it. Our guide, a young lady, said many of the girls hang a curtain so they can use the space as a changing area. She said the boys typically don’t but that’s not to say you can’t.

Thanks for the replies. I have another question regarding parking and eating when I move-in on the 17th.

So I will be living in Trusler (2nd floor, I think) and it says that after you unpack, you must move your car to a “satellite parking lot”, where is that located, is it a specific lot? It can’t be too far from my room since my mother can’t walk too much without getting tired.

Also when we go there, we want to eat at Broward Dining since there are a lot of options there (and I have the meal plan coupons) but is there any parking for visitors nearby that so we don’t have to walk too far to eat there?

thesos76,

If you want to block your closet with a curtain, purchase any long curtain and you will hang one panel. It’s not a big deal, it simply puts a “door” on your closet so you don’t see inside of it. That’s if you bother to even close it all the time!

As far as parking on move-in day, good luck. Parking will be a nightmare. Getting a parking space near dining will be a nightmare as there are dorms near there and people will be parked moving into those dorms.

As your mom has issues where she can’t walk far, does she have a handicapped parking pass? If not, getting a space near Broward Dining hall will be a matter of driving around and around until you find something near there.

As far as the mattress pad, many sites sell them for extra long beds. I believe even Walmart does. Believe it or not, but the bookstore actually sells them as well! Do you need one? That’s a personal choice. It’s not required but will of course make the bed more comfortable.

As far as the free bike repair… you have to supply the parts. If you have an issue, bring your bike over. They will tell you what you need and what parts you need. Once you get them you bring the bike and the parts back. It’s not an immediate repair, the amount of time (days) it takes depends on how busy they are and what needs to be done.

One more question.

How strict is UF regarding extension cord gauges? I accidentally bought 16 gauge cords instead of a 14 gauge since I thought that a greater number equals more thick.

Would me using 16 gauge as opposed to 14 gauge pose a problem?

kinda depends on your RA. if they’re a serious ****** they might catch it because it looks funny, but no ones going to pull out something to measure.

i’d probably leave it out. if you’re concerned, just put it away when they’re checking your room during the second or third week. they’ll never check again.

So I bought the new Microsoft Office at the bookstore during orientation but I have yet to install it. I intend on bringing both my laptop and my desktop but I am curious which do you think I should install it on?

Is it just a matter of personal preference?

Some software allows you to install it on up to a certain amount of computers… check and see if you can do the same with the Office software.

I am not sure if I can. Anyone here know if the Microsoft Office 2010 that you buy at UF can be installed on multiple machines?
