So right now I am a senior in high school. I will be graduating in 2010. Right after, I will be completing 60 units at my community college in three semesters: The upcoming summer, fall, and spring. I want to apply to Berkeley as a math major, and they only accept applications in the fall. Will I be applying during fall 2010, even though I will be needing the spring courses for my 60 units? Or do I wait all the way until 2011 to apply? Wouldn't I be wasting time if I do that? Is Berkeley going to reject me in 2010 because I didn't complete all the courses, but I will be?

If you intend to complete your 60 UC-transferable units through the spring of 2010, and also will have your major pre-requisite classes done, then you would apply during fall 2010.

You would update your fall grades in January. Your spring grades would obviously not be factored into your application because you wouldn’t have completed the courses yet. However, the universities do see the classes you plan on taking in the spring.

If you’re projected to have 60 units done by the end of spring and the pre-reqs done, you should be good to go. Of course, you’ll need to have a high GPA, EC’s, and solid personal statements too.

Also, a quick word of advice, make sure that you try to complete as many of the pre-reqs for the math major as possible by the end of fall 2010. The more pre-reqs you have done, (ideally all of them) with a strong GPA, the stronger your chaces will be towards acceptance.
