16A is filling up quickly and I might not be able to add it during Phase 2. There is like 100 spots left. If I can't take 16a in the fall, can I do 16b instead and take 16a in the spring? Would this make sense or do I need to take 16a in order to do well in 16b. I took AP Calc AB during my senior year and I feel like I passed the exam. Help please! Thanks!

this is what it says online.
Prerequisites: 16A.
Credit option: Students will receive no credit for 16B after 1B, 2 units after 1A. Two units of 16B may be used to remove a deficient grade in 1A.
Description: Continuation of 16A. Application of integration of economics and life sciences. Differential equations. Functions of many variables. Partial derivatives, constrained and unconstrained optimization

at Calso they basically made it sound that while you could waive out of 16a with I believe a three or better on AB, even kids that got 5’s or did really well in the class they recd to retake 16a. It’s just a higher level and pace and some kids overestimate their ability. But the prerequisite thing isn’t super technical, it just means that you have to have met the 16a level (perhaps by a 5 on the BC exam as well just to be safe) and feel confident. I did perfectly well in calc AB at my school but figure that thiss may still be challenging and worst case i get an easy A.

fwiw.

If you are taking math for a prehealth track, you need to take the full year. I don’t think you are allowed to take 16A after 16B, it doesn’t work like that. You could take no math this semester and take Math 16A in spring and 16B fall '11 if you wish.

If I plan to take 16a in the spring and 16b in fall '11, will I be behind? I am a premed planning to major in Integrative Bio.

there is plenty of flexibility in when you take all the premed stuff. The most critical set of class is chem 1A, because it is a prereq for later ones, are:

chem 1A -> chem 3A -> chem 3B and also chem 3A -> Bio 1A

math 16A -> 16B just like Physics 8A -> 8B

You want to be sure to get to Chem 1A quickly, as you need it to do chem 3A and the two are needed to do Bio 1A. Not so much of an issue for when you do the others, more based on fit to your schedule (and when you can get in). You might not want to take Chem 3A/3B along with Bio 1A in the same semester, because that would put two highish-work weeder classes together.

if you don’t think you will get into 16A this semester, you can do the following

Fall '10
Chem 1A

Spring '11
Chem 3A/L
Bio 1B
Math 16A

Fall '10
Math 16B
Bio 1A/L

Spring '11
Chem 3B/L
Physics 8A

Fall '12
MCB 102
Physics 8B

Also a word of caution
Biology 1A/L should not be mixed with Chemistry 3B/L. Those two classes are very tough, and combining should be avoided at all costs
Biology 1B also is not good mixed with Chemistry 3B/L. Bio 1B lab and Chem 3BL are major timesucks, so I would avoid taking them together (and thus I recommend that you take Biology 1B freshman year to avoid). Bio 1B and Chem 3B/L aren’t as bad of a combination as 1A/L and 3B/L, but they are still a bad combination nonetheless
