The trams do not operate on weekends. A cab ride between campus and the station is about $12 . You can also take Metro Bus 38, which runs along Jefferson Blvd north of campus and drops you right at the edge of Union Station. I don't recommend taking the bus coming back to campus because it requires waiting in a not so nice area, and certainly isn't advisable at night.

The trams/shuttles/buses don't go on the weekends. Go on the LA Metro website to find a bus that will take you there.

I've taken the 38 at night, and it was absolutely fine. There are stops very close to campus.

The 38 stops on the USC end are perfectly safe (just hop off at Jefferson & Figueroa or Jefferson & Hoover). I would be cautious about waiting on the Union Station end, since the bus stop is at Cesar Chavez & Alameda and is outside the confines of the station. If you like waiting on city street corners for 20 minutes at night, go ahead.

Dane is only going to union station, it seems, so it shouldn't be that bad. He won't have to wait for that.
