I personally enjoy living in the suites. I live in a 5 person suite (one bedroom of two and one bedroom of three students) and find it alright. Suites can be as small as 5 and grow to as large as 10. In these you have a common room (varies in size according to building) a bathroom (shower and toliet stalls) a closet, and hallway leading to the bedrooms. There are either 2 or 3 students in each bedroom depending on the size. Suites are awesome because there is always someone around and never too crowded. In addition, theres always some place to go, like the common room, if you need to get out of your room. Freshmen dorms are not 2 people to a room, rather the rooms are built and house 3 or 4 individuals. These are HUGE rooms which can fit a futon or love seat and give each individual their own section. You do not have a choice of where you live freshmen year, but choose where you live and who you live w/ your sophomore and junior years.

To be honest with you, its most likely going to be cheaper to live off campus. While its still not a bargin by any means, you can expect to pay the same, or less at an apartment or a private house which is larger than a dorm room. Parking can be a pain as we have two lots for commuters, both of which are served by a shuttle.

I am hearing that most guys run out of food $$ well before the semester ends and that they might need to add $800-1,000 to the food budget. Is this accurate?

Not true. Some people will run out of money by the end of the semester, but it does not require another $800 to make it through the semester. If anything, students run out w/ 1 or 2 weeks left, requiring anywhere from 50 to 100 bucks to get through. In addition, each register has a listing of where students should be every Friday, in terms of meal points. Its easy to keep track of your points.

How are internships in general?

Very well, but are required for most majors, not all. If your son/daughter wants to enter the school of communications, he/she will be required to do an intership before he/she graduates. The School of Health Sciences requries internships/clincials/research experiences as well as the School of Business and College of Liberal Arts (required of most majors, but not all in these schools - oportunities are present however).

Money is a touchy issue. Quinnipiac uses the FAFSA form to supply the difference between the EFC and the total cost of education for that specific year. In other words, if a families EFC was 27,000$ they would be expected to pay that amount (whether through cash or loans or scholarships). The cost of tuition and room/board is roughly 35K, leaving a 8K difference. Quinnipiac will try to award 8K to that student to aleviate that gap. While, yes I would like more money, I feel confident that QU has given me the best package based on my FAFSA form.

Thanks for taking our questions. I was just wondering, do you know anything about the Communications school? I visited last spring and I loved the whole setup, but do you know if they have a good reputation? I just found out I was accepted there and I need to make a decision regarding collleges.

THanks a lot

I am not a communications major, but I do live with three of them in my suite. They have alot of cool different types of projects to do and its unlike any of the other majors here. While I'm writing papers or doing research, they are off filiming a scene or working on a radio production. Its a different type of work, although just as difficult and time consuming. The equipment in the comm school is top notch, as everything is high definition television (everything is done in advanced digital formats). We have a television station and 2 radio stations, all of which are 24/7 and you can get your own show on any of these - you do not have to be a communications major or minor which is pretty cool. The School of Communications does have a very strong reputation as it is supported by Ed McMahn (sp?) and thus named after him (his daughter went to QU). Professors in this school usually have worked in the field of communications and are able to teach in a down to earth manor. I personally have never taken a comm course, but my suitemates have been able to experience the openness and the ability of their professors. These professors bring in experience, but also supply connections to their students. I have heard of internships at ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, VH1, MTV (MTV Springbreak :-)), local newspapers, radio stations, and we have also had a student travel to Greece to cover the Olympics for NBC. Communication students are also required to declare a minor outside of the school of communications (i.e. Psych, Mangement, etc). The one downside to this school at Quinnipiac, is that Comm majors are required to take ALOT of courses in addition to many courses outside of their major.

Don't sweat your decision just yet, wait for all of your school's fin aid packages to come in as with MOST colleges you have untill May 1st to decide. So relax, go visit all of the colleges you are interested in again, and hopefully that will help. Good luck! Any other questions, let me know!

Thank you for the reply.

I have a few questions relating to Freshman residence halls, and special dates during the year.
1.) Do many freshman dorms share one common bathroom, or does each dorm have their own individual bathroom?
2.)I got a poker table for Christmas, it's 72" long and 36" wide, will myself and 5 friends be able to set it up have enough room to sit, and play in a freshman dorm?
3.)When does winter break start and end?
Thanks for your time, I appreciate your help.

Just wondering if you're familiar with any student athletes?
My son is looking to run track. Does the team kind of stick together? Also, are you aware of the kind of $ they might offer?
Do you know of anyone with a very low EFC who had their need fully met?
Thanks very much for you info.

1.) Do many freshman dorms share one common bathroom, or does each dorm have their own individual bathroom?

For Freshman, a common bathroom is used, usually 1 per hallway. The bathroom itself is cleaned DAILY by facilities staff. While it certainly isnt your bathroom at home, its very clean and sanitary for the amount of people who use it daily.

2.)I got a poker table for Christmas, it's 72" long and 36" wide, will myself and 5 friends be able to set it up have enough room to sit, and play in a freshman dorm?

Well bedroom dimensions for the 4 person rooms are: 182 x 1710
3 person rooms are: 17 x 12

So depending on which room you live in, and how you arrange your furniture, I would say that it is possible.

3.)When does winter break start and end?

This year the last day of classes was December 9th 2005, with finals the following week. Classes resume on January 23rd 2006.

Doc53,

I do have a few friends on the track team and yes they do stick together alot. We have 21 sports, all Division 1, so it is a pretty intense season. Teams usually spend alot of time together due to the nature of their sport and the friendships they build. I am not quite sure about the money involved through athletics, you may want to give them a call.

I do know of a few people who have low EFCs and that were satisified with their fin aid package. I do know what it was or what specifically their EFC is, but they have said they were able to come to QU because of it.

Thanks for your help!

Alright the rumors are that QU students are alot of rich and preppy, and i guess snobby...is this true? What are most of the kids like... Does everyone play intermurals, if so whats the most popular...

Not bashing the school jw cuz im most likely going there

do scholarship notices come with our acceptances?

xnyc, No, they come out later. You can read this on QU's message board. Someone else asked this question over there. I think it said you can get this in Jan. or Feb. b/c they are rolling ( I guess they need to go through all of the apps that they receive first).

Quinnistudent, how's diversity lookin' on the QU campus? I'm an intel and wondering if you had any idea what finaid was like for internationals. I know it's competitive and not a whole lot, but if an intel should apply, and had a very high SAT and somewhat high GPA?

Are the sciences a major QU puts a lot of money and effort into?

The rumors about the majority of QU.... Although you may find yourself surrounded by a lot of "similar people" aka middle-upper class white people it just matters who you choose to be around. The typically stereotype basically sums up less than half of Quinnipiac, if thats not what you're into, there's 3,000 other people for you to be friends with!

When will Quinnipiac let her know if she is offered a scholarship? we are waiting. Any tips on how/when to request the housing you want?

You may want to call admissions about the scholorship information, I'm not sure when they are sent out. I know, however, that I did not recieve my scholorship information w/ my acceptance letter.

As far as housing goes, students cannot request any specific type of housing freshman year. Res Life using an assignment system that looks at student's lifestyles, majors, and june orientation groups. Sophomore and Junior year, students do choose where they want to live and who they want to live with.

thanks Quinnistudent.

Any good shows or entertainment put on by campus? Do you feel there is enough to do on campus besides parties and dorm gatherings? or is that all and does it feel boring for the freshman w/ no cars?

Do alot of kids go into town to the pizza place(forget the name...good brick oven pizza...Eli's ?)

How are the professors as far as being accessible for help and mentoring?

Do you know any thing about the art courses and facilities? Photography? Is there a dark room made accessible to students?

What are you majoring in? How do you find the academic advisement and also the registration processes/ bursar/ fin aid/ services? Helpful and professional or do you find it inconvenient?
